May 27, 2023
James G.C. Henderson B.A., P.Eng., in his 104th year, passed away peacefully at Mississauga Hospital
On May 27, 2023 during Leaside’s 110th. Predeceased by beloved wife Margaret (nee McKay); James is survived by his loving sons, David and John, and devoted grandson Jonathan, who continues his engineering legacy.
Missed by nephews Dr. Rob (Maureen) Hillis, Dr. George (Sally) Hillis and Bill (Terri) Hillis. James was born in Toronto to James B. Henderson of Stromness, Orkney, and Lizzie Garson, Ballarat-Harray, Orkney. Fondly remembered by relatives in Orkney and U.K. and cousins Ann & Tom Lyford and Lyford family, Watford.
James matriculated from Oakwood CI, and studied piano. A Uof T. Math and Physics Grad (’41- Vic), James’ interest in radio physics led to a Lab Inspector position, testing high-frequency radar cables at Leaside’s Research Enterprises Ltd (REL) during the war. (His job reference letter to Canada Wire & Cable Ltd., came from REL).
James bought his 1st (and only) Leaside house in 1945. He often walked to work at Canada Wire & Cable Co., where he was: Manager Engineering Standards 1968-70, and as Sr. Manager of Codes and Standards1972-84. Fondly know by his peers as the 'dean" of electrical standards (a moniker he'd humbly deny), James lent his expertise to the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Metric Commission of Canada; International Electrotechnical Committee, and is a Life member of the Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Vice President (1963-1970) and President (1976-1978) of the Insulated Cable Engineers Association (ICEA).
James and family worshiped at Leaside Presbyterian, where he was an Elder (1958). An avid reader (plus Toronto Star daily to 104), gardener, spectator sports follower, he loved family holidays at the former Grandview Lodge. John expresses the family’s gratitude to the Ewart Angus staff, who assisted in James’ care. A “Gentle-man”, deeply missed.
Celebration of life on Friday, June 23rd in Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre. Visitation 10 am followed by Service at 10:45 am with a Gathering from 11:30 – 1 pm.
