James Douglas Winchester (Doug) Hamilton was born May 22, 1932 in Listowel, Ontario.
Doug graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a degree in medicine, and
continued his training specializing in general surgery. Doug practiced in Essex before
moving with wife Leona and four young children to Hanover. At this time general surgeons
were required to perform procedures now undertaken by separate specialties; Doug’s
exceptional skills as a surgeon and his breadth of knowledge saved many lives in these
small rural communities. In Hanover he joined a practice and led the community through
the construction of a new hospital. Doug and family moved to Toronto in 1976, where Doug joined the team at The Salvation Army Grace Hospital, before leading the Scarborough Grace Hospital team through the construction of a new building and becoming Chief of Surgery. In 2011.
Doug, and his wife of thirty-one years and partner-in-life Brigitte
Hamilton, opened the Holly Endoscopy Clinic; with their commitment, business acumen
and hard work, the clinic has become a highly respected medical facility, providing
outstanding care and support to patients.
Doug was also a gifted musician and arranger, achieving the highest level of excellence
as he did with everything he pursued. In Hanover, Doug directed the local barbershop choir and was the orchestra leader for musical productions with the local theatrical group. Later, Doug established The Brass Connection which went on to win a Juno in 1982 for best jazz album. The Brass Connection II recorded several albums showcasing Doug’s talent as an arranger.
Doug was an exceptional person and leader, brilliant, profoundly creative and generous.
Doug’s contribution to his community over his ninety-four years is unparalleled. Doug was also a loving and supportive family member as father to children Fran, Jim, Paula and John, husband to Brigitte, and grandfather to Shannon, Adam, Grace, Hannah, Jake, Sophie, Mathew and Jessica. He leaves an enormous void in our world.
