In memory of
James Charles "Jim" Delaney
January 14, 1964 -
August 30, 2016
It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our precious husband and father, Jim Delaney, on August 30, 2016, at our home in Scarborough.
Loving husband to Deborah (Coombs), devoted father to Nicholas and Michael. Jim is predeceased by his parents, John and Dorothy (Muench), and his brothers, Jack and Pat. He is survived by brother Paul and sister Debra (Don Devlin).
Jim graduated from the University of Toronto in 1985, with a BSc in Human Biology. He returned to school mid-career to earn his MA in Conflict Analysis and Management from Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC.
During his undergraduate years he was involved as a student leader, and he moved easily from that experience into a long and rewarding career in administration at the UofT. He held a series of progressively responsible roles in Student Affairs before being appointed as Director of the Office of the Vice-Provost, Students, serving between 2007 – 2013. He then served as Acting Assistant Secretary of the Governing Council, and most recently as Advisor to the Chief Administrative Officer of UTSC.
Jim was a long-time and active member of the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services (CACUSS) and its Student Affairs and Services Association (SASA) division. He served terms as President of both organisations. In 2003, Jim received SASA's Outstanding Service Award. In 2006, he received the CACUSS Award of Honour, the organisation's highest honour. In 2000, CACUSS brought Jim and Deborah together at the organisation's conference in Toronto. Thank you CACUSS.
Jim loved music, of all kinds, but especially classic rock. He was a talented drummer and enjoyed sharing his love of music and concerts with his sons. He was a great cook, a skilled grill-master, a long-suffering Buffalo Bills fan, and a devoted husband and father. He also made an excellent dirty martini.
There are no words to express how much he will be missed.
Celebration of Life to take place Saturday, Sept. 17, 1-3pm, with interment to follow. There will be no formal service. We welcome friends, family and colleagues to join us in a casual reception as we remember Jim, celebrate his life, and say our farewells. There will be a few brief words at 2:15.
In memory of Jim, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association.
