In memory of

Jaesoon Kim

August 5, 1946 -  July 28, 2025

With sorrow in our hearts, we announce the passing of Jaesoon Kim, aged 78. She died peacefully in her sleep on the night of July 27th, 2025 next to her devoted husband of 55 years, Kookjo Kim.

She was the eldest of six, born in Yeosu, South Korea to parents Bangduk Lim and Jongshim Kang, on August 5th, 1946. She went to school in Seoul, graduating from KyungHee University with majors in Language and Literature in 1968.

Our father has recounted the story of how they met in Seoul 1964, during her first year of university. They met at a piano bar located on the upper floors of the Peninsula Hotel with panoramic views of Seoul, "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers playing in the background. Despite serving in the Korean Army and the US Navy in Vietnam for over three years, they continued to exchange love letters. After six years of courtship, they exchanged vows, and wed on June 20th, 1970. Shortly thereafter, Kookjo embarked on a journey half-way around the world, leaving behind Jaesoon and his firstborn, to reunite after he secured employment and a place for them to live. Jaesoon and Suerien would emigrate from Seoul and land in LB Pearson with only $8. Since 1972, Jaesoon and Kookjo settled and thrived in Toronto, raising their family and running several businesses over the years.

Jaesoon will best be remembered for her generosity of love and dedication to her husband and three children. Her capacity to endure challenges and embrace life's joy with stoicism, optimism and grace was her essence.

She is survived by her doting husband, Kookjo, and three children Suerien (Garry), Patty (Felix), and Harry (Mieun). She was blessed with five grandchildren: Gabriel, Calvin, Sophia, Megan and Roger.

Jaesoon also leaves behind three siblings and their families in Toronto (Jaeyang, Jaesook, Jaehwa), and one sibling in Seoul (Jaeki).

Jaesoon's family would like to express genuine gratitude to all of her caregivers (Marlyn, Melba, Tsega, May Rose, Noelyn, Cornelia, Erwin, Maryam, AeJin, Elizabeth, Tika, Grell), who faithfully visited and provided care in her home, with special acknowledgement to Maria for her particular loving care, gentle touch and angelic patience.

We were very sad to hear of the passing of Jaesoon Kim, our next door neighbour. Jaesoon and her husband Joe have been kind and friendly, welcoming us to the neighbourhood and chatting while doing yardwork. We send our sincerest condolences to the Kim family and will keep Jaesoon and her family in our thoughts.
