In memory of

Jackie Thornber

July 16, 1942 -  January 21, 2024

Sadly, on Sunday, January 21st Jackie passed away with family by her side.
Jackie will be greatly missed by her daughter Jen, her favourite son-in-law Mike, loving grandchildren, and her beloved Chancellor. She is predeceased by her husband Ian Gillis (September 2015). She will be missed by her brothers Bert (Donna) and Philip. Her older sister Barbara passed away 3 days earlier on January 18, 2024.

Jackie began working with Bell Canada on Bay Street after high school and for many years was a volunteer worker with the Girl Guides of Canada. Jackie’s love for working with children became apparent as she attended night classes to help her gain admission to Teachers College where she became a primary school teacher for the Scarborough Board of Education from the late 1960s to the mid-1990s. She predominately taught kindergarten throughout her career. Her classrooms were colorful and creative. Always ready with a song or poem, she would encourage the actions that went along with them.

Jackie was a very loving and affectionate person. She was a natural caregiver who took care of many at various times. Her many nieces, nephews, and friends will share in these memories.
Her love of reading, card games, word games, chocolate, and ice cream will be remembered with smiles! Her love of Christmas and all things about it, especially her Nutcracker collection was well known.
Answering the yearly call of migration, Jackie and Ian for many years would head to Myrtle Beach for a few weeks in the spring. Watching the sun rise over the ocean and playing mini golf.
Many fun family times were had.

A Joint Celebration of Life will be held for Jackie and Barbara on Saturday February 17, 2024.

A heartfelt thank you to the staff at Amica Little Lake for the care provided to Jackie. They are truly exceptional people.

The family appreciates your support during this difficult time and asks that you make contributions to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in lieu of flowers and contribute by sharing memories of our beloved Jackie with each other.

Sad to hear of Jackie's passing. We are all forever grateful for the many Canada Day memories pool side at Ian and Jackie's. They always made us feel like family and created so many great memories for all that attended. Rest in peace Jackie and Ian. Jen and Mike and all the family, we are sending our love and condolences.

Rick and I (and our girls) have such fond memories of Canada Day celebrations by the pool at Ian and Jackie's home. Year after year we'd celebrate with family and friends the first official kick off the summer. They were the most welcoming and accommodating hosts!
Of course, as the years passed, and distance separated us, the frequency of our visits diminished but our friendship did not. As my idol, Bruce Springsteen says, "You can't make old friends."
We will miss Jackie as we have Ian. Our connections is now through Jennifer. We'll
cherish that.

I was honoured to be able to care for jackie for many years at Amica at little lake. She had a smile that could light up a room, a contagious laugh that would make you chuckle and laugh too, she always could tell if you were having an “off” day and would offer a smile or a hug for comfort. Jackie had a heart of gold, it’s not the same without her and caring for her during the final days of her life will always be remembered. Even in her final days, she had the biggest smile on her face and her ocean blue eyes still had the most beautiful sparkle in them her eyes didn’t look “tired” they looked so young! Jackie will always be one of my dearest resident that I enjoyed to see so much. She allowed me to always eat my dinner with her and would say “hey, are you having your dinner yet? How’s that recliner chair it looks comfortable how about I join you?” And she would then try and get out of bed and join me, of course I then had to help her back into bed as she would throw her legs over so many times. We would always laugh. Rest in peace Jackie, heaven sure got themselves a real angel.
