With sorrow we announce the passing of Ivor Lloyd Rooney, age 98, of Toronto, Ontario, on April 10, 2020 after a brief illness with COVID-19.

Ivor will be deeply missed by his devoted and loving daughter Diane McWhirter and her husband David. Fondly remembered by his granddaughter Jennifer McWhirter (and partner Justin), grandson Ryan McWhirter (and partner Erin), and great granddaughter Elowen. Forever remembered by extended family and dear friends. Predeceased by his wife Margaret Rooney (nee Prout) of 68 years, brother Desmond and wife Arlie, sister Vivienne and husband Don, and parents Joseph and Margaret.

Ivor was a World War II Veteran and member of the Queen’s Own Riffles of Canada. He recently received the award Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour for his service on D-Day. After the war he spent three decades of his career as a civil servant with the Queen’s Printer for Ontario. He will be remembered as a loyal and generous family man with interests in music, hockey, and gardening, and a wonderful sense of humour.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to all the staff at Altamont Care Community, where Ivor resided for eight years, for their dedicated and compassionate care.

A private Burial Service took place at Pine Hills Cemetery in Toronto on April 15, 2020. A Celebration of Ivor’s life will be scheduled for a later date when the threat of the pandemic passes.

Maureen Cater (Cousin)

Entered April 16, 2020 from Markham Ont.

Ivor's Mother and my Mother were sisters, so we were first cousins.
I have many great memories of Ivor. - While overseas, Ivor was one of the Queen's Own Rifles troops given "air time" to speak to his family back in Canada. As he spoke, he mentioned many family members by name, including myself. I sat on the floor listening to our floor model radio. It was quite a thrill for me, a little girl back in the early 40s. When the war was over, I was Ivor and Marg's junior bridesmaid when they married.
All my love to Diane and family at this very sad time.
Maureen
