In memory of

Irene Elizabeth Smith

December 8, 1945 -  October 17, 2023

Irene Elizabeth Smith, passed away at home in Toronto on October 17, 2023 at the age of 77 after a long and courageous battle with heart disease and cancer. She is predeceased by her parents the late Roy and Jennie Smith and her late brothers Brian Smith and David Smith. She is survived by many friends who miss her dearly. Irene is fondly remembered for her great sense of humour, intelligence, resilience, out-of-the-box thinking, and passion for helping others. As per Irene’s wishes cremation has taken place and instead of a traditional funeral a private tribute in her honour will be held at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, the following are a few options for your consideration. Please feel free to choose whatever feels right to you as any of these would be greatly appreciated:
*Donation in her memory to the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto, where she volunteered
*Helping a friend or stranger in need as she often did
*Light a candle and say a prayer in her memory.

Irene, we've known each other for decades and I will miss our stimulating conversations on a multitude of topics, your awesome sense of humour, your creative out-of-the-box thinking and views but mostly your friendship. So grateful and blessed to have shared so much with you. Thank you for always "being you" and for the gift of authenticity and friendship. Rest in peace my dear friend - always in my heart.

My heart sank when I received word of Irene's passing. We had last spoken several months ago. Yes, she was a person of integrity and intelligence, and so witty! And indeed, courageous. So pleased to have known her.......dear Irene.....

I have known Irene since 1971...that's more than 50 years. We lost touch for a while, but she reached out a few months ago and we had some good conversations. At that time she was struggling with many issues. Then, when I called a few weeks ago, her message box was full. I am sorry I did not get to have a final chat with her. May she rest in peace!

Irene and I met when she came to Cobourg to teach English at the West Collegiate in the early seventies. We soon became friends, Over the years we kept in touch .When Irene moved back to Toronto, she would come back to Cobourg for visits, and reminisce about the wonderful years she spent in Cobourg and the lasting friendships she had made.
