SHIN, Hwa-Seung passed away in his 90th year at Sunnybrook Hospital Palliative Care Unit. Loving and devoted husband of Young-Cha; wonderful and inspiring father of Julia (Michael), Judy (Russell), and Brian (Amy); adoring and proud grandfather of Tyler, Claire, Sophie, Anne, and Briana; kind uncle of Hee-chul, Rick, and Elfreda; and beloved by many.
Hwa-Seung was the only son in a family of six children. He lost his father at a young age but was always guided by his spirit. Hwa-Seung excelled academically and was a top scholar at Gyeongdong high school and Inha University. Upon graduating as a metallurgical engineer, he moved to Hamburg, Germany, to train and work. He spent a carefree year learning the German language and travelling through Europe. It was one of his treasured experiences. He returned to Seoul where he met and married the love of his life, Young-Cha. She was charmed by his keen intellect, good looks, and action-oriented nature. Adventurous, strategic, and strong-willed, Hwa-Seung ventured to Toronto to find employment prior to bringing over his young family in 1969. As a highly recommended and hard-working engineer, he quickly obtained a position with Engelhart Corporation and settled in Canada as one of the earliest immigrants from South Korea. He later owned and successfully operated a few small businesses. He spent countless hours volunteering as the finance director of the Toronto Korean United Church. An endless curiosity and eagerness to learn kept him mentally sharp, active, and so capable. An avid golfer and traveler in retirement, his time, attention, and greatest joy pivoted to doting and nurturing his grandchildren with Young-Cha. His grandchildren’s achievements were a tremendous source of pride and happiness. Each day of his life was full of family and an incredible social network that continued to support him in his last days. Hwa-Seung’s parting words were, “Live a good life. Be kind to others. Be happy.”
We will forever miss our Dad. We are immensely grateful for the unconditional love, courage, and can-do determination he modelled.
