In memory of

Hilda Kula

June 5, 1928 -  December 5, 2021

KULA, HILDA (nee SUU) Passed away on Sunday, December 5, 2021 in her 94th year, at Thompson House. Loving wife of the late Valentin, mother of Yuri (Cynthia). Survived by brother Heimar and sister Helga in Sweden. Mourned by many nieces and nephews in Sweden. Also missed by the Fraser and Ottensmeyer families.

One of 8 children, Hilda grew up on a farm in Estonia. During World War II, as a 16 year old, she was forced to flee across the Baltic Sea in the middle of the night. Facing 6 foot high waves, her family made it to Sweden safely. 9 years later and newly married, Hilda set off again. This time across the Atlantic to a new life in Canada.

Like many before, she worked hard to build a new life. Working as a dressmaker on Spadina Avenue during the day and learning English at night school. Her sewing skills brought many neighbours and friends to her house. Often at her machine by 5 a.m. to fix another piece of clothing. There is a saying, "fast, good and cheap, but you can only have two". Hilda defied that and gave all three to her clients.

Hilda never complained, even when the last year was a struggle. She was a longtime resident of Leaside and Don Mills. Her journey has now come to an end, but what a story it was. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Thompson House in Don Mills, who provide such comfort and support to all who come through their doors.

Cremation has taken place. A private gathering for interment will occur at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to York Cemetery.
