In memory of

Helen Yik-Man Kwan

Helen Yik Man Kwan “Tasevski”
1982 - 2023

A beloved wife, big sister, auntie, daughter, friend, Electrical Engineer, and Hello Kitty Enthusiast.

Helen ended her journey on the morning of August 4th, 2023 surrounded by her family.

Helen was born in Hong Kong and came to Canada at the age of eight. She loved to read and had an affinity for math and science. Her interests led her to study Electrical Engineering at U of T where she graduated in 2005. Always a hard worker, Helen often held multiple jobs to help support her family. Despite all this, Helen was always warm and had a knack for forming lasting friendships everywhere she went. She was fortunate to also find the love of her life on this journey before establishing her career at Arup.

Helen enjoyed her work, food (she famously “couldn’t eat sushi west of Jane”), travel, friends, and continuously learning new things in adulthood like skating, swimming, crochet, and Korean - everything but getting her G license. Helen was very thoughtful and caring, not just to her friends and family: it was not unusual to hear stories like her rescuing a duckling or drove an old lady (who she did not know) home. Above all, she was an early adopter of technology and the “I.T. Representative” for many. Helen loved to learn about a wide range of topics, both big and small, and that made her very relatable. Her vast interests, generosity, and kind nature earned her many good friends and also a special connection with each and every one of her nieces and nephews.

Helen is survived by her husband Zoran, her mother in law Sultana, her father Kitsun, her sisters Cathy and Victoria, along with six amazing nephews and nieces - Nicholas, Filip, Dawson, Catherine, Annemarie, and Laura Helen.

Our heartfelt thank you’s to Dr Gary Lau, Dr Michael Raphael, Dr Elie Isenberg, and the very wonderful team at Sunnybrook.

A private funeral will take place at the Meadowvale Cemetery on August 10, 2023.

In lieu of flowers, please support the Sunnybrook Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of Helen.

Please accept my sincere condolences. I cannot imagine the depth of this loss for you and your family. I'm hoping the many memories you shared with your dear sister bring you some peace, joy and healing during this most difficult time. You remain in my thoughts and prayers.

Helen was an amazing person to get to know and work under at Arup. To this day, she in my eyes was the most technically gifted person I have ever had the opportunity to work with. She was an amazing supervisor, but more importantly, was just an extraordinarily nice person to be around. She will be forever missed.

My deepest condolences to Helen’s family. Helen and I met because of a mutual hobby and became good friends through our shared interests. Although I only knew her for a short time, Helen left a lasting impression with her kindness and generosity. I will forever cherish the friendship we had. She will be dearly missed.

Thank you for your friendship during my years in Arup from 2014 to 2020. You were always such a ray of sunshine and have really helped me through some tough times on projects. I just returned to Arup hoping we would reconnect and work on projects again. You will be deeply missed. With fond memories, Mei

I feel so lucky to have known Helen. We crossed paths whilst working at Arup in Toronto and from the brief time we worked together, her smile, warmth and good humour stay strong in my memory. My deepest condolences to her family and friends
