In memory of

Helen Voudouris

January 27, 1927 -  March 12, 2023

With overwhelming sadness, we announce the death of Helen “Eleni” (Dalmarides) Voudouris on March 12, 2023, at the age of 96. Eleni was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, to Chryssa and Nestor, both Refugees from Asia Minor. While in her teens, Eleni suffered through the dreadful years of WWII, including famine and occupation by a foreign army, only to then suffer through the Greek Civil War. Eleni met her future husband John in Athens, after they both graduated from the Athens University of Economics and Business. In turn, they travelled to the New World, where they both obtained Masters’ Degrees from the University of Missouri, Eleni’s being in Romance Languages. After marrying in Chicago, Eleni and John immigrated to Canada, where they found peace, stability, opportunity and happiness. They had two sons, Nicholas and Alexander, who also met with happiness and success in their lives, due in large part to the nurture received from their parents. Alex married Jennifer, who brought much joy to Eleni, as did her Grandchildren Justin and Julian. As with all immigrants lacking in financial means, Eleni sacrificed to create opportunities for future generations to succeed, something she unquestionably achieved. Together with being a wonderful Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, and Grandmother, Eleni was intellectual, artistic and wise. She always wanted to be a Journalist, a Pianist, a Painter, and an Author, having written an autobiographical novel of her time during the Civil War. But her lasting and most special gift was her kindness, which will forever bring tears of joy to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Food Bank at dailybread.ca. Viewing shall be between 10:30-12:00, followed by the interment and then a reception.

Dearest John & the Voudouris Clan:
I am writing to express my deepest sorrow and convey my sincere sympathies upon hearing of the passing of your beloved wife and mother, Kyria Eleni, this past Sunday. May the God bless her soul and may the Lord provide you and your family with solace and courage during these difficult times. I was neither lucky nor blessed to know your mother personally, but I got to learn a lot about her personhood from your father, John. She was kind, smart, and a spirited ball of endless energy. Give all your family members, direct and indirect, a big hug from me. Be reassured that you are not alone through these difficult times and that I can understand your loss and pain. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hugs, from an old, yet geographical distant, friend,
George Mahmourides
