In memory of

Heidi Winick

December 1, 1953 -  August 16, 2020

It is with the heaviest heart that we announce the passing of Heidi Winick (born Wahl), beloved widow of Ted Winick. Loving mother of Jordan, Kailyn, and Maxie. Dear sister of Evelyn, Rolf and Ron.

Heidi had the most incredible gift of making someone immediately feel comfortable, happy and important. If you had ever met her, you would have had an experience in which her smile would have left you smiling, her energy would have transferred over to you, and her caring would have made you feel welcome.

Heidi was an incredible force, growing her Spirit of Math campus into a vibrant community of over 750 students. She was a bright light to everyone who was fortunate enough to know her. Her patience, optimism, encouragement and genuine love for her students was palpable. Her spirit will live on in the families and children she's impacted.

Memorial donations can be made to the Chess Institute of Canada.

I will miss your hugs and the sound of your laughter. Thank you for the many blessings you brought to my life. You are a hero, and a great example of what it means to show up for others, and love them unconditionally.

Heidi loved everyone and whenever Leah and myself would come to their family home Heidi made you feel welcome with home-cooked food movies and intellectual conversation like you were part of their family. What a great mother she was to Maxie Kailyn and Jordan. They don't make them like Heidi anymore. She touched so many people. We will love her forever.

Heidi was the best sister one could hope for. She was always doting on my brother and I. When we were younger my brother and I would ask her "who is your favorite?" Heidi already had the emotional intelligence of someone much older as she would privately tell each one of us that it was us. Later when she was at the University of Waterloo, Heidi would invite us to Oktoberfest and would parade us around to her friends and exclaim "These are my brothers". Boy did we feel special in her presence. This was the kind of effect Heidi had on everyone, making them feel important and special. I do not believe I ever heard Heidi mutter an unkind word. Her door was always open and she would love it when I would drop by to visit and chat for hours. Later when I moved to the US, Heidi would always call me on my birthday and sing me the "Happy Birthday" song after which we would again chat for hours. Heidi was fiercely proud of her children and would always fill me in on their great accomplishments. Yes, Heidi was the best sister one could hope for and it was such a privilege to have spent time with her on this earth. Heidi, I love you and look forward to the time when we meet again.

Heidi was the most welcoming person, making all her children's friends feel more like family. Even in times where she was struggling, she never missed the opportunity to ask others how they were doing and express her caring for everyone around her putting everyone at ease instantly.

She will be greatly missed.
