In memory of

陳伊莉夫人 Hedy Yi Lee Chan

July 18, 1958 -  January 1, 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of Hedy Yi-Lee Chan announces her passing after a brief yet courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, January 1, at the age of 61 years.

Born in Hong Kong on July 18, 1958, Hedy was the youngest of all siblings and the only daughter. She was a star student at St. Bonaventure College and was one of the co-founding leaders for the Legion of Mary in that college. Upon completing her schooling, she started her career as an executive secretary for a high profile law firm in Hong Kong.

In 1984, Hedy immigrated to Canada and took some time off to raise her family. Once her children were older, Hedy was determined to pursue a career in education and worked hard to complete her certification through George Brown which led her to the path of becoming an Education Assistant for the Toronto Catholic District School Board. For the past 18 years, Hedy worked at Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School assisting special needs children; she was extremely dedicated to helping them with their growth and development. One of her favourite things to do was to come up with creative and interactive projects for them to collaborate on.

While her time with us simply does not seem long enough, Hedy accomplished more than anyone else could in a lifetime. She was a devout Catholic and was committed to organizing clothing and food donation drives multiple times a year for the Sisters in the FMA Philippines province. Hedy also thoroughly enjoyed hosting parties in her home for her friends, finding treasures at Value Village and watching the Sound of Music. Anyone could see that Hedy had a heart of gold; her kindness and generosity touched so many people and we know that she will be missed so very much.

Hedy leaves behind her daughters Carmen (Huy) and Rachel; brothers Simond (Cecilia), Charlie, and Brian (Brenda); and Gabriel (ex-spouse). She also leaves behind her beloved cat Sushi. She was preceded in death by her parents Ka Chuen Chan, Fong Sok Han and her brother Alan.

The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her during her illness especially to the Oncology & Nursing team at the Scarborough General Hospital. Flowers or donations to Best Buddies (www.bestbuddies.ca) would be greatly appreciated.

Even though we didn't spend a lot of time as classmates, I will always remember your smile, your big heart and your energy. I also remember that because the desks were packed so close together in the classroom, you and I hip bumped each other one time. We both had a good laugh over that! Rest in peace, my dear friend. You will always be in my heart.

To our dearest unforgettable Hedy:

Oh, how much will we miss good Hedy, especially Sr. Yolanda who has already considered her as one in the family.
How sudden has been the turn of events.Barely 4 months ago, we were happily exchanging emails and she was in her usual, lively self. Then the bad news came and so quickly did she deteriorate into something like depression, a common reaction among those afflicted with the Big C.I could hardly believe it.When I announced this to my co-sisters in the community, they were all surprised that she was already at stage 4 when the cancer was discovered.and learning that it was liver and stomach. They too were very sad as they have now established a deep affection and affinity with Hedy. My Mother Provincial through her Secretary communicated this at once to all the 20 FMA Houses in the Philippines to pray for her healing, if it was for her own good and in accord with God's Will and wisdom as only He knows what is best for His children. How many people in her own locality had she extended her unconditional assistance, service and consolation to the lonesome, the deprived, the depressed visiting them at home, preparing food for them, driving them to the mall to go shopping, accompanying them to the hospital and many other good deeds too numerous to mention. Her friends and colleagues can give testimonials of her goodness. She is an embodiment of compassion, patience, love and nobility of spirit.

And what is she to us in the Philippines?
Hedy had consistently sent hundreds of boxes to FMA Philippines Province and to our poor mission places since 2011 up to the very end of her life. Believe me that all the FMA here can never thank her enough. My co-Sisters will remember her for a long, long time but Sr. Yolanda will ever remain grateful to her till the end of her days What a friend and sister she had been to me and to us all. In all these years how many people did she make happy and contented from her generous self-giving through her regular donations of SPAM, pasta, and a variety of countless items. Every time we opened the boxes, how thrilled were we because of the various surprises contained therein. She was an angel that gave delight and joy to literally thousands of recipients who benefited from her extraordinary goodness and love for many years.

From the time I learned of her condition I was deeply saddened and all my every day Masses, prayers and Rosaries were offered for her and her intentions, especially praying that she be granted courage and strength to bear the accompanying pain.

When Bernardine informed me this morning that Hedy had passed away on New Year, I was at first shocked but was quickly relieved that Hedy's sufferings had already ended.Hers was a sad exit from this world but a glorious, triumphant entry into the next life. How blessed is she that the Lord took her away on this remarkable day - New Year and the feast of the Mother of God. All of us marveled at God's sign of special love for her. For us this is an indication of His predilection to His favored child and we imagine her being led by the Hand of Our Lady to enter into eternal bliss where the Blessed Trinity, all the angels and saints welcome this beloved soul. Mother Provincial through her secretary contacted at once to each of the 20 FMA communities in the Philippines to offer one Mass in suffrage for the soul of Hedy.

And to my dear Carmen, Rachel, Charlie and all relatives and friends of Hedy - a heartfelt condolence ! My good Carmen and Rachel, move on. How really painful it is when your beloved Mom is no longer with you visibly but trust in God, cling to his providential care and guidance no matter what happens, you have now with your Mom a powerful intercessor in heaven.

And to all my dear past pupils, Hedy's friends and relatives who at one or more times had supported Hedy's Food Drive, I will never be able to to express my deepest THANKS to your big-heartedness. I commend you all to the Lord and Our Lady promising that till the end of my life, before them, I will always remember you.

In Jesus and Mary,
Sr. Yolanda FMA

Together with the Holy Angels in Heaven and all of you Hedy's friends, we say goodbye to the Home-going Hedy. Yes, she was one of my best students when I was the acting Principal of our new school Saint Bonaventure College and High School in Tsz Wan Shan, Kowloon, Hong Kong. In fact, she was one of the co-founding group leaders of the new Legion of Mary in that College. She collaborated with me wholeheartedly to lead the Legion group. She was kind, but most of the time quite reserved but always collaborative with me and others.

Two years later, I was called to Taiwan to help the newly elected Provincial Superior. But in less than a year later, I was summoned to serve in the Sacred Congregation of Evangelization of Peoples of the Holy See as the Director of the Worldwide Overseas Chinese Apostolate which lasted for almost 40 years until I was discharged because of age limit (75 years old). Consequently, I left Rome to return to my own Religious Order of Friars Minor (O.F.M.) in Taiwan. But, in my many worldwide pastoral visits, especially in Canada and the U.S.A., where we have the biggest number of Overseas Chinese Communities, at least more than 50 larger ones, I had had many occasions to see Hedy and her group friends. She had kept her friendly attitude all the time. For her departure for Heaven, we have nothing but happiness and congratulations as she was going to see in person her beloved Saviour Jesus Christ and His Holy Mother Mary, God the Father and all the saints in heaven! We need not cry but, on the contrary, we should all rejoice and be happy! It is really the genuine sense of going back to Heaven!

With affectionate greetings, I am, yours in Jesus the Saviour and in His and our Holy Mother
Mary, (Friar) Paul P. Pang, O.F.M.
