In memory of

Hedwig Erna Marianne Gregor

September 23, 1928 -  December 1, 2024

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Hedwig (Heddi) Erna Marianne Gregor, at the age of 96. She was a cherished wife to Frank (predeceased in November 2003), a devoted mother to Paul (Michaela) and Peter (Maribeth), and a loving Oma to Lisa, Alex, Sophia, Patrick (Kathleen), and Ian (Lauren).

Born in Riga, Latvia, on September 23, 1928, Heddi's life journey was one of resilience and adventure. At the age of 12, she and her family emigrated from Latvia, passing through Poland before settling in Germany. She graduated from the School of Nursing in Bielefeld, Germany, in 1949, and her passion for adventure led her to explore the country sides of Germany, Italy, and Spain through annual hiking and cycling trips. In 1955, seeking new horizons, she moved to Canada, where there was a high demand for nurses. Heddi became a registered nurse at Toronto East General Hospital in 1957 and proudly obtained her Canadian citizenship in 1958.

In 1962, Heddi transitioned from hospital nursing to a leadership role as Head Nurse of one of Ontario's first licensed nursing homes. Over her career, she dedicated more than 32 years to managing nursing and retirement homes with Community Lifecare, touching countless lives with her compassion and care. After retiring from healthcare management, Heddi continued her service to the community as Parish Nurse at Peace Lutheran Church for over 25 years, blending her healthcare experience with her deep spiritual care for others. In addition to her role as Parish Nurse, Heddi was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church for over 50 years, volunteering with Ajax Community Care, and helping to establish Hospice Durham. She also ran a community kitchen at the church and supported newcomers through the Immigration Canada Host Program.

Heddi's love for adventure was matched only by her passion for the outdoors. She and her late husband, Frank, shared a love for sailing, canoeing, hiking, camping, horseback riding, and touring across Canada and the United States. For over 30 years, the entire family enjoyed their shared love of horses, with Heddi forming a special bond with her horse, Tango, who adored her as much as she loved him. Heddi also had a deep passion for gardening. Known for her "green thumb," she cultivated beautiful gardens at her home, on the family farm, at the church, and in the local community garden.

Though she rarely spoke of them, Heddi received numerous accolades and awards for her boundless giving, both in her professional career and through her volunteer efforts. When asked what guided her in her many life decisions, Heddi always credited her faith in God and her deep spiritual reflection. Her life was a testament to love, compassion, and service. She will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
