In memory of

Haritini Bethanis (nee Xanthakos)

October 5, 1937 -  May 8, 2024

Haritini Bethanis, (nee Xanthakos), was born on October 5th, 1937 in Konakia, Greece. She was the eldest of 4 children, and endured the death of both her parents by the time she was 10. She felt it was her responsibility to get on with her life in order to provide for her siblings, a path to follow, and a safe place to land. So, at 22, she crossed the ocean to marry her beloved husband of almost 65 years from a photo, a few letters and the good word of a family friend. Together they forged a life of love, respect, duty and honour. Hari had a quick wit, and could read a person’s character almost on sight. She was loving and generous, but she did not suffer fools gladly. A consummate hostess, her parties and homemade cooking were legendary. She was the backbone of our family until Alzheimer’s began its slow progression over 16 years ago. In the end it was a quick and aggressive cancer that ultimately claimed her life. Haritini is survived by her beloved husband, Evangelos, her devoted children, Steve (Kathy), Anna (Harry), Anastasia (Kosta), her cherished grandchildren, Kalliopi, Anna-Sophia, Evangelos, Nicholas, Vasili and Evangelos, and her loving sister, Aphrodite. She is predeceased by her beloved siblings, Haralambos "Bobby," and Katina. We would like to thank the staff at Gibson Chartwell Long Term Care Residence for taking such good care of our mom. We are forever grateful. In spite of Alzheimer’s, she regained her dignity and sense of self while in your care.

A tribute to my Thea Xari-
So many of cherished childhood memories include my Thea Xari. Her elaborate dinner parties and holiday feasts, the countless weekends and summer holidays I spent at her home having sleep-overs with my cousins- memories that I will always cherish. Those that were fortunate to receive an invitation to one of her dinner parities will agree that she was an increasable host, always welcoming and as a true Greek mother, pushing food on you! Her meals were extraordinary- she made the best shrimp appetizers, soutsoukakia and cabbage roles and lets not forget her infamous koulurakia and tsourekia! My Thea Xari had a wicked sense of humour and many times you could clearly see the mischief in her eyes as she was on the verge of saying something witty or smart- thankfully this genuine and endearing quality quality remained with her throughout her prolonged illness and brought comfort to us knowing she was still the same Xari in so many little ways- even if she couldn't always place our face or remember our name. Thea Xari, thank you for sharing your love and kindness with me.
Thea, you will forever be entwined in my most precious memories. I love you, I miss you, I wish you a beautiful, peaceful, restful paradise, reunited with your sister, brother, parents and loved ones that were eagerly waiting to welcome you.
"Your life was love and labour, Your love for your family true, You did your best for all of us, We will always remember you."
Your loving niece,
Helen
