In memory of

Hans Paabor

May 10, 1947 -  September 25, 2024

Hans Paabor was born on May 10th 1947 in Stockholm Sweden, and died peacefully with gratitude for a life well lived on September 25th 2024 in Toronto. He was 77. Hans was predeceased by his parents Valfried and Helje Paabor, as well as his brother Arne. He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Carol Evkovich-Paabor, his daughter Alexandra, his son Simon and his wife Megan Deeks, and their children Helen and John Paabor. Hans also leaves behind many beloved members of his extended family, as well as close friends that will always be known as aunts and uncles to his children.

Hans’ family immigrated to Toronto in 1951 from Estonia after spending some years in Sweden where he was born. They settled in the Toronto neighbourhood of Riverdale, where Hans attended Withrow Avenue Public School and Riverdale Collegiate before completing his high school education at East York Collegiate. Hans pursued higher education at York University, where he earned his degree. He went on to dedicate his professional career to public service, working as a civil servant for Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Hans was a proud third generation sailor and loved nothing more than to set off for the horizon in whatever boat he happened to have. Over the years with his wife and family he would extensively sail the Great Lakes, while also tackling grand adventures along the eastern seaboard of the United States and the Caribbean.

Always active, Hans would find golf later in life, and enjoyed regularly playing snooker. In retirement he enjoyed spending time with his neighbours and walking his dog Gus. He also found ways to give back to his community and volunteered his time with local organisations and sailing clubs.

Most of all, Hans was a devoted husband, father, and friend to many. A kind and tremendously thoughtful person who cared deeply for those around him. He will be greatly missed.

Following the funeral service, all are welcome to attend a reception at Rosedale Golf Club beginning at 430 PM. Food and drinks will be served.

In lieu of flowers, Hans asked that those who wished might consider a contribution to their local food bank instead. A listing of food banks across Canada can be found here: https://foodbankscanada.ca/find-a-food-bank/

So many wonderful memories. Carol & Hans my lifelong friends. They are the kindest, most loving example of friends one could ever ask for. They supported with great advice, quiet listening and wonderful laughter. Honorary Uncle respected & loved by your East Coast Clan. We sailed, enjoyed hot cocoa after brisk sail ⛵from Niagara-on-the-Lake with Charlie Rawlings, teaching us neophyte sailors the thrill & exhilaration of sailing. Hans was such a great teacher that upon retirement Charlie is sailing in Australia & our daughter is fascinated too. Mentor extraordinaire! Dinner at CBYC with Carol & our Daughter Britt, another generation keen due to Uncle Hans & Auntie Carol. We love you both & your beautiful family. Fair Winds, Captain!

I knew Hans as a member of Aquatic Park Sailing Club. As soon as Hans joined, he threw himself into Club life. He dedicated countless hours to improving the running of the Club. He helped modernize our IT database and his improvements are still benefitting the club now. Hans was extremely well liked at the Club and we are all saddened to learn of his passing. Sail on Hans.
