In memory of

Dr. Hans Dietrich Strauss

February 28, 1944 -  January 19, 2022

Dr. Hans Dietrich Strauss, M.D.
February 28th, 1944 - January 19th, 2022

Beloved husband to his wife Jacquie for almost 35 years. Father to Warner (Michelle), Jennifer (Tom) and John (Julia) and his five grandchildren Marc, Gabriella, Lena, Luc and Roan as well as his siblings Gerhardt (deceased), Karin and Wallee.

In the aftermath of the second world war, at the age of 14, Hans came to Canada with his parents in a quest to join his two sisters Karin and Wallee. They settled in Thunder Bay, where Hans completed highschool. He moved to Toronto in 1963 to attend the University of Toronto. During this time he met his first wife Emily, mother of Warner & Jennifer. Hans pursued a very successful career in medicine, with a fellowship at the University of Toronto in cardiology. In 1985 he became a founding father at the Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga. Shortly after, he met his second wife Jacquie and had their son John. Hans remained indebted to his patients until his detiorating health forced his retirement at the age of 77, shortly before he passed away.

Hans was a scholar and a storyteller. He was an excellent speaker, who traveled the world lecturing. His quest for knowledge was shown through his love of reading, as well as his love of science, mathematics and history. His talent for teaching was invaluable and he found great satisfaction in passing on his knowledge. Hans greatly enjoyed cottage life in Muskoka with his family and friends, and lived a very active life biking, hiking and swimming.

Hans was a very kind, caring and gentle man, who was a bon vivant and truly enjoyed life. He was very devoted to his family and took care in nuturing long standing friendships.

His battle against melanoma showed his ferocoius love of life, his courage in facing life's challenges with stoic dignity, and his acceptance of the inevitable. His optimism and humour will be forever missed.

We thank the team at the Princess Margaret Cancer Center. Our very sincere thanks to his long term colleague, Dr. John Jovanovic and all the nurses at the Credit Valley Hospital, and all the staff and colleagues who cared for him.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Online condolence messages may be made by visiting his memorial page at www.etouch.ca. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Credit Valley Hospital Foundation at:https://trilliumgiving.ca

I too would like to offer my condolences to the Strauss family. I was fortunate to have known Dr Hans Strauss when he joined the medical staff at Credit Valley Hospital. He was a very highly respected Cardiologist who was dearly loved by all his patients. He was a pleasure to work with in ensuring the very best medical service was available to all patients. You will be sadly missed Hans! Rest In Peace.

I first met Hans in 1980 when I was a medical resident. He was an excellent teacher-also kind and patient. We met frequently in later years at medical conferences and on the ski hill. He was a genial and witty conversationalist. He communicated optimism and joie de vivre.

My wife Loris and I send our sincere condolences to Jackie, John, and family.

My deepest sympathies to Jacquie and children and the rest of the family. I worked with Hans in the ICU/CCU at Credit Valley and learned lots about cardiology, other aspects of medicine and what books to look for. It was a pleasure to read any of the notes he dictated, since they were well written and invariably peppered with medical history. I enjoyed every interaction I had with him. He was always seemingly in a good mood and has left a permanent mark on many. Thoughts to you all.
