A Journey of Courage and Resilience
Born on October 27, 1933, in the historic hills of Sparta, Greece, Grigorios (Gregory) Pierakos was a man whose life was defined by devotion—to his family, his craft, and his new home in Canada. The son of Ioannis and Eleni (John and Helen) Pierakos, Grigorios grew up alongside his siblings, Voula, Christos, Fotini (Fanny), and Pericles (Peter). His formal education was cut short by the necessity of war; as a young boy, he left elementary school to labour on the family olive farm, a sacrifice that forged the tireless work ethic he would carry for the next nine decades.

In Greece, Grigorios found his first calling as a carpenter. He would ride his bicycle to work each day, a young man with a vision for beauty, pridefully hand-crafting furniture that was built to last.

From Pier 21 to the Heart of Toronto
On September 16, 1959, Gregory embarked on a life-changing transatlantic journey aboard the Queen Frederika. Arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax, he boarded a train bound for Toronto with little more than his skills and a dream. Through disciplined work and careful saving, he achieved the immigrant’s milestone of purchasing his own home. It was there, on December 10, 1966, that he began his greatest chapter, marrying his beloved Magdalini and establishing the foundation for a lifetime of shared memories.

Master of the Flame
In Canada, Gregory’s precision transitioned from the woodshop to the kitchen. He began his culinary career at the Le Baron Steakhouse before becoming a fixture at the iconic Tom Jones Steakhouse, nestled beside the King Edward Hotel in downtown Toronto. Gregory was a master of his craft, known for "the perfect steak."

This mastery wasn’t reserved for patrons alone; it was the heartbeat of his home life. Gregory was the undisputed king of the backyard barbecue. To sit at his table and enjoy a steak he had prepared was to experience his hospitality in its purest form. He loved his work so much that, upon reaching retirement at 66, he stayed on for an extra year just to remain in the heat of the kitchen he loved.

A Creator and a Caretaker
Gregory was a man who saw potential where others saw waste. His garage was a sanctuary of creativity—a treasure trove of tools, window frames, and spare parts. He believed everything had a second life. Whether it was using an old bicycle frame to support his climbing roses or repurposing hockey sticks to hold up the beanstalks in the garden he tended with Magdalini, Gregory’s "inventions" were a testament to his resourcefulness and whimsical spirit.

Though his life was marked by the profound tragedy of losing his son, John, at the age of twenty-five, Gregory’s heart remained open and kind.

The Joy of "Papou"
One of Gregory’s greatest joys was becoming a grandfather. As "Papou," he found a wonderful companion in his grandson, Dante. From the early years of playing ball to the teenage years spent debating the fate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, their bond was special. The perennial question, "Do you think the Leafs will win the playoffs this year?" became a cherished refrain between them, a bridge across generations built on sports and laughter.

A Legacy of Kindness
Gregory Pierakos will be remembered as a man who always had a happy smile on his face. He was a gentle soul who made everyone feel like a guest of honour the moment they walked through his door. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, a garden held up by hockey sticks, and a family who will forever miss his generous spirit.
