In memory of

Grace L.Y. Chan

September 6, 1963 -  February 27, 2020

Toronto, ON —Grace Chan passed away peacefully on February 27, 2020 at the Palliative Care Providence Hospital after a long struggle with cancer.

Grace was born in Hong Kong in 1963 and immigrated to Canada in 1969 together with her mother (Jane Sui-Chun), father (Kinson) and brother (David). Her sister, Ruth was born shortly after in Toronto, ON. From a very young age, Grace immersed herself in books, science fiction, fantasy and mystery. Her foray into the world of authorship was part of her dream come true. Her career as a computer programmer facilitated her other passion which was travel. Grace had the opportunity to travel and work in various locations around the world such as India, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Japan, Europe, and the United States. She grew up and lived primarily in Toronto, however, she also lived in Regina, Saskatchewan for different periods. Regina had a special place in Grace’s heart as she had made many treasured friendships. She loved that she could connect and build bonds with the local writing community consisting of writing groups and published authors. Many of them became close friends who continued to offer her support during her battle with cancer since 2017. In 2010, IFWG Publishing released her first book in her Empire Series trilogy: The Empire, followed by The Rebels and lastly, the Andromedans. Grace wrote under the pen name Elizabeth Lang and was also an accomplished graphic designer of book covers and promotional materials.

Those around Grace, were blessed with her kindness and generosity in so many ways. She always took joy in providing a helping hand, an attentive ear and words of support, wisdom and encouragement. Her departure leaves a definite void in all our lives.

She is survived by her mother, Jane; her father, Kinson, her brother, David from Toronto; her sister, Ruth (Ken), and niece, Jenna, and nephews, Samuel and Isaac from Regina. She also leaves behind many cousins, aunts, uncles, and extended family in Toronto and Hong Kong.

A memorial service celebrating Grace’s life, will be presided by Rev Peter Mah at York Cemetery & Funeral Centre in North York, on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 10:00 am.

The family has been richly blessed by all the support, prayers and kind words from dear family and friends. Although not expected, in lieu of flowers to honour Grace’s memory, please consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society at the following memorial page created for Grace. (Burial of remains will occur the week after the memorial service.)

Dear family and friends,
Thank you for being with her during her time with cancer. She wished she could return once more to Regina, but it wasn't meant to be. She is missed by the Saskatchewan Romance Writers. We had many conversations about writing and she was there to cheer on all of us as we journeyed on the writing path. She is missed.
With deepest sympathy,
Annette

Sad that you have departed this world, but comforted knowing that you are with God. Rest in Peace, Dear! You have brought so much joy and warmth to those privileged enough to have known you.

you did it again! you weren't supposed to leave a cliffhangar in your book series and nowi'm not going to know what happens next in the Empire series. mrs. beeston doesn't get to wear her 'indianna jones' outfit.... and i don't get to give you a hug or see your smile. i will/am missing you so much already. there is an emptiness in my heart now that wasn't there before, especially now that i know that i'll never see you online or hear your voice on the phone or facetime. i kept thinking that you would be around forever somewhere, but there is a void where you used to be. i know that we will meet again some day, but it is the time between now and then that will be emptier. you are loved and missed by your friends and family. if i hear keys being pressed up there, then i know that will be you writing your book.

love and missed,
jodine quong

Grace was a dear friend. I felt blessed to know her. The world has lost a talented, generous, funny, unique woman, and we are all poorer for this loss. My prayers are with her family and friends.
