In memory of

Gerald Frederick Smitham

February 27, 1932 -  February 20, 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald Fredrick Smitham (Jerry) on February 20, 2020. Jerry was born to Fred and Leah Smitham on February 27, 1932 and blessed all of us with his sense of humour and infectious laughter until his death. Jerry was predeceased by wife, Nancy Smitham (nee Balison) and friend, Julie Weiss (nee Mech).

He was dearly loved by his Children Thaïs and Ricky. Nieces and nephews Cathy Wetherelt (Terry), Bob Smitham Jr (deceased); Susie (children Bobby and Leah).

In his relationship with Julie he was blessed by welcoming Terry, Tammy and their sons Troy and Trevor Weiss into his life. Jerry loved cheering his boys on at hockey, lacrosse or what ever endeavor they undertook. Jerry also gained a close friendship with Julie’s sister Theo Mech.

Loving brother of Betty (deceased), Bob (Una deceased) and adopted sister Rosemary Toth. Will be missed by Sister-in-law Joan Seabrook (William Sr deceased, son Billy deceased) and brother-in-law Wilf Locke (Donna and Joyce both deceased).

Jerry was very involved in St. Peter’s Anglican Church, being a lay reader, singing in the choir and making sure those that needed a ride to church got it. Jerry loved Gilbert & Sullivan Operetta’s and performed in many with the Oshawa Choral Society in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s. Jerry retired from John Crane in the early 90s which allowed him to pursue his love of golf and fishing.

Jerry’s family would like to thank the nurses, staff and doctors at Port Perry Lakeridge Health hospital for making Jerry’s last days as comfortable as possible.

Jerry will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Sunbeam Centre at sunbeamcentre.com would be appreciated by his family.

We miss Uncle Jerry very much. A lifetime of laughter and big bear hugs! Because I had red hair he always said the fireman were going to come out and put the hose on it everytime we passed a fire station. Memories from childhood. Terry will remember their golf games. Thais and Rick were blessed to have a such a devoted Dad.

Bernie and I were so sorry to hear of Jerry’s passing. We loved his laugh and the way he enjoyed life. Jerry made us feel very welcome when we first started at St. Peters’s, and our children Bernie and Kira fell in love with him immediately.
We know that Jerry and Nancy will be happy to be together again. May you Rest In Peace Jerry. Love Linda and Bernie
