December 12, 1929 -
October 20, 2023
George Vahaviolos was born in Mystras, Sparti on December 12th, 1929. He was the second of seven children born to Nikolaos and Aggeliki (Velikas). On October 17th, 1954, he married Helen Stassinakis from Tripi, a nearby village. Soon after being married, in the spring of 1955, they left Greece for Canada. They landed on the shores of Halifax and then travelled by train to Toronto to start their new life.
George was a dedicated, caring father to Angela (George) and Nick. Through the years, he worked the family restaurant businesses all while helping to raise their children and taking care of the family. He was a loving, treasured grandfather to Anna (Jimmy) and Pano (Ellie). He was also the very proud great grandfather of Thanasi, Tia, and Angela.
During his younger years in the village, George worked hard in the fields and the “Kamini”. He also enjoyed partaking in the local church as a psalti. There he was able to share his faith and love in religion through his strong, distinctive voice.
At family gatherings he was his happiest, as he cherished those special moments. He would often break out with a song (a solo or duet with Giagia) from the past that made everyone reminisce their roots.
During George’s most difficult times, he was his usual calm and right to the point self. He faced all situations head on with perseverance .
On October 20th, 2023, he left us with his unforgettable memory. He will be deeply loved and greatly missed by all of us, as he truly was one of a kind.
