The Herbert family is saddened to announce the loss of Frieda, who passed away peacefully on June 28, 2021 at Langstaff Care Community in her 99th year. Beloved wife to Joseph (d. 1998). Proud mother and forever remembered by her children Dianne (Raymond) and Graham (Christine). Adored grandmother to Wayne (Jaqueline), Tracey (Shaun), Kevin (Ruby), Michael, Josh, Todd and Olivia. Loved great grandmother to Teira, Jaylaen, Nijah and Ayla. Frieda will also be dearly missed by her many nieces and nephews, both here in Canada, South Africa and Germany. Frieda is predeceased by her brother’s Ernest, Otto, and sisters Olga, and Brenda. Survived by sister Patricia, who sadly passed away two days after Frieda.

Frieda was born on January 31, 1923 in Parrow, Cape Town, South Africa. She was the eldest of six children. Frieda married Joseph (Jocky) Herbert on December, 21 1946 and they had 52 wonderful and happy years together. Frieda worked as a bookkeeper for a Hardware store in Cape Town until 1970 when she immigrated to Canada with Jocky, and their children Dianne and Graham. Once in Canada, she worked as a bookkeeper for Scotiabank for 15 years, until she retired. Frieda loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and always looked forward to the special occasions, family picnics and vacations spent with them. Frieda was dedicated to Willowdale Presbyterian Church for over 40 years. She was an active member of the church’s social committee for many years and she enjoyed planning and participating in a variety of activities, such as potlucks, craft classes and social coffee hours. She appreciated all the well wishes and letters from her church family over the years. The church and its members held a special place in her heart.

Due to COVID-19, our capacity restrictions are limited, therefore all events for funeral gatherings must be considered by invitation only. A Private Family Visitation in Frieda’s memory will be held on Saturday July 10th from 1:00 – 2:00 pm at York Funeral Centre. A Funeral Service will follow at 2:00 pm. For those who wish to view the service remotely, a link to the live webcast will appear 10 minutes before the scheduled service time. In lieu of floral tributes, the Herbert family kindly asks that you consider making a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Frieda’s memory.
