In memory of

Frederick Sai Tsang Lee

October 22, 1938 -  March 8, 2023

Frederick Sai Tsang Lee was born in Shanghai, China on October 22, 1938. He was the eldest son of Siang-Ting Lee and Ken Ching Lee. When he was 11, Fred’s father took a job in Hong Kong where the family moved and settled. Learning Cantonese and attending St Mark’s School, his friends called him Shanghai B. In 1963, Fred left Hong Kong to study engineering at the University of Toronto. It was his first time away from his parents and two brothers, Tony and Steve and with the strong attachment he has always had for his family, he spent a very homesick 17 days at sea on the first part of his journey, before arriving in Toronto by train. But Fred successfully started his new life in Canada, completing his degree in 1968 and becoming a mechanical engineer. It was also at a party at university that he met his wife, Jinny, and they were married in 1970. They had three children, Erica, Janice and Mark. Fred’s family was always the most important thing in his life, and the family took many trips together across North America, Europe and Asia over the years and even a few cruises despite his earlier unpleasant experience at sea. Fred also pursued many interests, including training for a half marathon, playing tennis and badminton, photography and doing stained glass. He loved music and going to concerts, including old favourites from his youth like Gordon Lightfoot, and new discoveries like Sarah McLachlan. As a true engineer, he also tackled many of the home improvements and renovations to the family home. Fred mainly worked in the aviation industry throughout his career, and upon his retirement continued to take pleasure in his pursuits and enjoy time with his family, especially the arrival of his granddaughter, Ruby. Despite conquering a lymphoma diagnosis in 2017, his health declined. Fred passed away at Trillium Health Partners, Mississauga Hospital in Mississauga, Ontario on March 8, 2023.

I was fortunate to go on a Hawaiian cruise with Fred and his family. I adored him and enjoyed making him smile on the trip. Prior to boarding the ship, a photographer takes your family photo in front of a cheesy backdrop. When Mr. and Mrs. Lee were trying to coax their kids into the photo, I quickly took the liberty of jumping in between them for the photo of the 3 of us. Smiles all around. I was too cheap to pay for it so instead I took a photo of the printed photo of us that was locked behind a glass display case in the ship. Later in the trip, I gave Fred a stuffed animal as a gift. I was happy to hear years later he still had it. Fred was a very generous man and I’m happy I was able to make these memories with him. I miss him. Love and hugs to you and your family.
