In memory of

Fred Obedkoff

January 3, 1956 -  December 2, 2024

Our beloved father, brother, family member, friend, teacher, uncle and neighbour Fred Obedkoff, 68, of Scarborough, passed away peacefully in his home on December 2nd, 2024.
Fred was born on January 3rd, 1956, to the late Fred and Molly Obedkoff in Grand Forks, British Columbia. Shortly later, his sister Luba Obedkoff was born. Fred was born and raised as a Russian Doukhobor.
Fred attended the University of British Columbia and graduated in 1982 with his Bachelor of Science and Teacher Education. Following graduation, he moved to Toronto, where he fell in love, and made his life and home.
In 1986, Fred married Debbie Stewart-Obedkoff who became ill in the early 2000’s and eventually deceased at too young an age. Fred cared for both his wife and he raised their one daughter, Lauren Obedkoff, for much of her life as a single father. He would do anything to bring joy, warmth and care to her. Fred is survived by Lauren.
Fred was a beloved teacher for almost 40 years within the Toronto District School Board. He was a biology teacher for many years, eventually becoming the head of the department. Fred taught abroad in the summers, spending much time teaching science in Costa Rica with Blyth Academy. He also taught as a supply teacher many years after retirement, and often worked with special education classes. Fred loved teaching, he loved children and making kids happy. He was always positive, finding little one’s strengths and encouraging their greatness.
Fred was an avid traveller. Travelling to countries like Mexico, United Kingdom, Costa Rica, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Cuba and so many more. He loved to take in the local cultures and meet new people. As a social butterfly, Fred could navigate any culture by making friends wherever he went.
Fred welcomed so many people into his home including students from around the world. He always made people feel comfortable and ensured that you felt at home. He was very generous and would do anything for his friends.
Fred was a long-time member of Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club, and could often be found socializing and bringing friends along during their many music and event nights.
Fred was loved by many. He was the kind of man that could bring warmth to a home, that could light up a party with his infectious laugh, and bring a smile to your face when he walked in the room. Fred was taken from us too soon and will be missed by so many.

Visitation and Funeral Service will be held at PINE HILLS CEMETERY & FUNERAL CENTRE, 625 Birchmount Rd., Scarborough (north of St. Clair Ave. E., 416-267-8229) on Sunday December 15, 2024 at 11:00am with visitation 1 hour prior. Reception will follow. In lieu of flowers donations to the Hospital for Sick Kids would be appreciated.

I met Fred through his daughter Lauren. Wish I'd had more time to get to know him and talk about Sci-fi. However, I'm grateful our paths crossed, brief though it was.♥️🖖

Lauren, my deepest sympathies for the loss of your father. Having know Fred since we were kids I can say he was one of the most welcoming, kind and generous people I was fortunate to know. Fred was unique and special. He will be deeply missed.

I was truly saddened to hear about Fred's passing. I will always remember Fred with his infectious smile that was always present on his face, no matter what! I have found memories of chaperoning the Ski Club trips from Albert Campbell C.I. with much laughter and stories shared. His daughter Lauren would join us on these trips, his true love for his daughter was always known either when he was with her, or by the proud stories he shared of her at work!
My deepest and sincerest sympathy goes to Lauren at this time. Hold on to your memories and he will forever be with you in your heart! <3
