In memory of

Eufemia Colaco

July 3, 1929 -  March 11, 2023

Eufemia was the eldest child of Jose and Olinda Lopes and grew up with her three brothers and five sisters in Daman, India. She married Roque Colaco in 1954 and moved to Bombay, India, She came to Canada with Roque in 1996.

Eufemia was a devoted home maker and even before she was married and had her own family, she helped her parents take care of her siblings, soon being recognized as the uncrowned matriarch of her family. She firmly believed all children must have a good education and firm foundation so that they would become successful and independent and contributing members of the family.

She was very talented, a great seamstress, a very good cook, a baker and wine maker. She was effortlessly able to cook up a meal in a short time and was a welcoming hostess to relatives and friends.

Eufemia was fond of reading, doing word puzzles and sudoku, crocheting and baking as much as in 2022. She was never hesitant to try out new things and learned and improved the process along the way. She was comfortable with a cell phone for over a decade. She was very aware of current affairs and sports. She loved to watch Jeopardy. Eufemia had strong faith and belief in God and was able to overcome the many health challenges she faced.

Eufemia volunteered at the Malton Village Long Term Care Home. A few years' ago she received an award from Mississauga Fire Fighters for alerting the Fire Department of an imminent serious event.

Though she had numerous health issues over the decades, she was able to nurse back to getting better and going about her busy independent life.

Eufemia died on Saturday, March 11, 2023, in hospital.

She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Gisela (Glenn Dodd), Zenaida and Cilesia (Anil Sousa); grandchildren, Vishal, Chloe, Priyanka (Amos Campbell), Krystal (Aaron Almeida), Taran (Amanda Rodrigues), Tushar and Tejas and great grandchildren, Kether, Amelia, Kiva and Elliot and her nephew, Joe (Jennifer) as well as her brothers and sisters and their families and her late husband's family.

Dear Avó Eufemia,

1 of my fondest memories of you will always be coming over to your house in Bandra East, the smell of freshly baked bread in the oven and hot chapatis on the tawa were the most welcoming. Some days we watched as you patiently and carefully squashed grapes over time, to make the best tasting homemade wine. We spent hours in the garden, climbing trees, smelling the flowers and chasing butterflies or building forts with mud.

Avõ Roque and you were always so welcoming; Avõ Roque, busy gardening or feeding the bulbuls, humming a tune and always with a smile on his face and a gentle word.
You Avó, looking after our needs, using words of encouragement for us to brave the world and disciplining us when we needed it.

Thank you for being a grandmother who was supportive and encouraging. You had a way of truly understanding things from a younger persons perspective which was always so reassuring and safe; it made conversations so easy and fun.

You are truly loved by family and friends all over the globe; you are in all of our thoughts and prayers and we will miss you immensely. Rest peacefully now, with Avõ Roque by your side, and watch over us.
