DODGSON, ERNEST (Ernie). Ernie’s life was a testament to his unwavering Catholic faith, love, kindness, humour, and strength. He was the most beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, in-law and friend. He left us peacefully with his loving daughter Julie by his side on February 25, 2025, at the Houses of Providence. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Mary (August 2024), and son Terry (November 2007). He is survived by his children Julie (Peter), Claire, and Ernie (Cathy), ten grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, in-laws along with several nieces and nephews. Ernie was born on September 2, 1931, in Leeds, England and predeceased by his parents and siblings.
Ernie enlisted in the British Royal Air Force (#3125553) and served as an Admin. Orderly and Cook II for over three years.
Ernie and Mary married in 1954 in England and immigrated to Canada in 1955 with their first born, Terry and were blessed with three more children in Toronto. Together, they built a life of deep faith, love, tenderness and experiences. He taught by example through his deep-rooted love for his faith and family where he dedicated himself to the well-being of others with his servant nature in volunteering with several organizations during his life. Ernie was active in his parish(es) and was a compassionate member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a scout leader, a volunteer driver taking cancer patients to and from treatment at the Princess Margaret Hospital, a member and past president of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 13 where he was honoured with a lifetime membership for this dedication and contribution.
Ernie became Mary’s main caregiver in the 1990’s and tenderly provided her with the attention she required while showing immense compassion, affection, and dignity. His undeniable impact of love for his wife, family and helping others will be his legacy. His generous soul has left a trail of memories full of love and devotion which will be cherished forever.
Ernie’s family is truly grateful to the staff at the Houses of Providence and Father Rhéal Bussière for their warmth and kindness in caring for him during his time there. Visitation will be held at Pine Hills Cemetery Funeral Centre, 625 Birchmount Rd., Toronto, 416.267.8229 on Friday, March 14 at 1:00 p.m. followed by his funeral (live stream will be available) at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel.
