After a ten year courageous battle with cancer, Emilia passed away peacefully on September 4, 2019. Beloved mother to Enzo (Linda), Franca (Gregory Bain), Fabiola (Peter Butler), Alfonso (Joyce). Devoted nonna of Matthew, Daniel, Robert, Davide, and Jonathan. Fondly remembered by her family and friends. She loved her children and grandchildren deeply, and will be greatly missed.
Emilia was born in Casoli, Italy and immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1958. She journeyed back and forth several times, finally settling in Toronto with then-husband Mario in 1963. To help make ends meet, Emilia worked tirelessly at various companies. Latterly, she enjoyed ten years in film finishing at Kodak Canada before retiring in 2000. She was an avid cook and enjoyed entertaining family, neighbours and friends on weekends and holidays.
The family is grateful for the outstanding care provided by Sunnybrook’s Odette Cancer Centre, and the Palliative Care Unit. While in their care, Emilia showed no signs of slowing down; two motorcycle trips around the Sunnybrook property with Enzo, monthly trips to the Elmwood Spa for pedicures and lunch with her children, various outings to her favourite restaurant (La Vecchia on Yonge Street), trips to Ikea, and a few picnics with family in the Veterans Garden.
Thanks to the Veterans and Palliative Care programs, Emilia was able to participate in numerous activities including music hours, Bingo games and cooking classes, all designed to bring veterans, patients, and loved ones together. Not to be forgotten are the many volunteers who provided her with cookies and coffee in the auditorium. A familiar refrain - “two cookies please…one for me and one for my daughter”!
“….grief is the price we pay for love…”
