In memory of

Ellen Starr

May 27, 1947 -  May 19, 2023

It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our incredibly loving and devoted mother, Ellen Ricklin Starr. Ellen passed peacefully in hospital with her two sons, Ari and Jonah by her side, each holding her hand and reminding her how much they will always love her. Ellen’s greatest love and purpose in this world was being their “Mama.” In addition to Ari and Jonah, Ellen will be forever missed by her loving daughter-in-law, Katie whom Ellen loved as her own, her four year old grandson Benjamin, who brought endless joy to her life, her extended family on both sides of the border and all her friends who always felt like family. Ellen is predeceased by her parents, Solomon and Betty Ricklin, brother, Arthur Ricklin along with multiple aunts that Ellen always adored. Ellen was born in The Bronx, New York and grew into her teens in New Rochelle where she developed her passion for musical theatre leading her to perform in off-Broadway productions. Additionally, Ellen was a fierce defender of equal rights and social justice, actively participating in the 1960’s US civil rights movement including marches, protests and sit-ins. After graduating from the University of Cincinnati, Ellen moved to Toronto and built up a very successful psychotherapy practice of 40 plus years. She was extremely passionate about supporting her patients; many of whom have reached out about the tremendous loss they feel. Ellen’s life was not always easy however her wisdom, selflessness, unwavering compassion for others, deep kindness and loving, caring energy was felt by all who knew her. While there are no words to describe the pain her family and friends feel, Ellen will be remembered for how she loved and treated those around her. Ellen was all heart and her boys will carry that love in their hearts forever.

My heart felt condolences to Ari, Jonah and family. I was fortunate enough to meet you all at Miriam Graham’s home many years ago. Ellen was exactly as you have described her, a loving, caring person who adored her family. May she rest in peace as she certainly knew how much she was loved. Sandy Doblinger
