OHL, ELIZABETH (Betty)
June 7, 1945 - August 27, 2024

Hers was a life that was well lived.

It is with profound sadness and loss that we share word of the passing of Betty after a courageous battle with cancer. Betty was the proud and loving daughter of Erwin and Dorothy Ohl (predeceased), sister of Robert and his family, and best friend of Barb and her family. Betty treasured her family and friends, and they her.

Betty was born in Montreal, but grew up in Scarborough from the age of 4, attending Regency Heights P.S. and W.A. Porter C. I. Upon graduation, she attended Toronto Teachers College and then began her teaching career in TDSB in 1967. Betty then moved to York Region in 1986 where she became a teacher, Vice Principal and Principal in Thornhill and Markham schools. She loved being an educator and was a strong advocate for equity and diversity in her schools.

Cottage life on the Lake; travel adventures in Canada, Europe and Caribbean; and walks with her dearly loved dogs were just a few of her pastime activities. She was an avid photographer in her early years and kept that interest throughout her life. Whether it was at her home or cottage, Betty approached renovation projects with expertise and skill. Music and sports played an integral role in her life; both as a participant and as an observer.

As she dealt with her many health issues over the past four years, she always rose to the challenges with optimism, spirituality and determination. In her resolute and steadfast way, she overcame the challenges in ways that would have stymied most of us. It was in her nature to believe that she was going to “beat it”.

Heartfelt thanks are extended to the medical staffs at Mount Sinai, UHN, Markham Stouffville hospitals and in particular, Princess Margaret who attended to Betty’s care with professionalism, empathy and kindness.

As an expression of sympathy, and in accordance with Betty’s wishes, memorable donations may be made to The Farley Foundation or The Dolly Parton Imagination Library. There will be a private interment at Pine Hills Cemetery.

Betty was a wonderful person who had such a big heart. She always saw positive sides to everything. What a lovely lady. Betty was truly like an Aunt to me and my girls. An amazing role model to us as she showed us you can put your mind to anything.
She will be forever missed, but never forgotten.

Betty's quick wit and dry sense of humour will be something I will miss. She was a loyal and true friend and colleague whose unwavering support for all children will be her lasting legacy.
With Betty in your corner, families, students and staff knew she would stop at nothing until the goal was achieved.
She will be missed greatly. I will think of Betty often but especially when looking out over lake or water and see the sun shine off the surface.
Thank you for your friendship Betty. Rest in Peace my friend,
K!M

Another diamond in the snow that will glint to remind us how remarkable, thoughtful, supportive and kind Betty was to our family. She always had interesting stories to tell of her travels, work and life experiences that either amazed us or made us laugh. Just like an Aunt she truly cared about us as we did of her. Our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.
