In memory of

Eleftherios (Terry) Giosmas

May 12, 1928 -  January 31, 2022

It is with great sadness and much sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Eleftherios (Terry) Giosmas on Monday, January 31st at the age of 93, surrounded by loving family at Michael Garron Hospital. Born in Nafplion, Greece, he served in the Greek Armed Forces as a young man and later became a mechanical engineer. He immigrated to Canada with his family in the early 60's. Terry was an enormous and passionate soccer fan; he played, coached and managed many soccer teams over the decades and was instrumental in establishing the 'Homer Greek Soccer Association' in Toronto. He loved politics, travelling, reading, sports and was a huge dog lover (always sharing his meal with the family dog). He was very proud of his culture and believed that everything originated from the Greeks, just like Gus Portokalos in the movie ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding'. A very giving and thoughtful man, Terry had a zest for life and for having a good time. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Caterina (2011), he is survived by daughter Harriet (Dennis). Proud Pappou of Mary (Chris) and Eric and adored by his two great-grandchildren, Logan and Gabriella. Heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses in G5 at Micheal Garron Hospital for their kind and compassionate care. Dad, you will be forever loved and missed.

Due to the current situation and restrictions, the family will be holding a private memorial service at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church followed by a burial service at Pine Hills Cemetery on Monday February 7th, 2022. In lieu of flowers, a contribution in his honour would be appreciated: Alzheimer’s Society of Toronto, a local youth soccer club or a charity that is close to your heart.

An "over the top" proud Greek who spent many hours at the Greek Club in the Danforth area which was his second home. Predeceased by his brothers with extended family in Florida and Greece.
He loved to see youngsters learning soccer and would be watching games on TV constantly even when they were older past games.
I'm sure he's up there trying to organize a game with the angels.

My dearest Pappou,
We had a special bond. You were my biggest fan and thought I could do anything I dreamed of - nothing could stand in my way; "You're Greek, of course you can do anything!". Your passion, strength, grit and pride are to be admired and will continue to inspire me to believe in myself, as much as you believed in me. I am thankful for the time we spent together, mostly shopping or eating, and I am so happy we got to share special memories travelling to Greece and the birth of your great grandkids.
Logan will make you proud as he carries out your passion for soccer, and your sense of style (shoes & accessories) and love for shopping lives on in Ella.
I will miss you so much Pappou - Σ'αγαπώ (I love you).

Pappou was a very kind man! I recall him holding my mother's hand and keeping her safe (while she had Alzheimers) during one of many visits to the Danforth. You told me Jackson was a "strong name" and gave me permission to marry Mary! :). I also learned that ice hockey was Greek! Something to do with the word puck coming from the Greek word pagos meaning ice??..??.. Very "big fat Greek wedding" if you ask me! Can't blame you for being a mega proud Greek man! Hugs and kisses from Logan and Ella - I'm sure one or both will carry on the passion for soccer! I bet Zoey, Jaz, Lady, and all our loved pets are at your side waiting for feta and crackers! You will be missed - Love the Jackson family!

What a man! Everyday was like living in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, minus the Windex. Although I wouldn't put it past him to maybe have tried that too? :).
Always was up for watching and talking sports. Mostly soccer, but would proudly watch some Blue Jays or Maple Leafs.
I'm always reminded of his zest for doing what he wanted to do, even driving in his 80's. I remember that red Saturn car ;).
I'm sure he's up there with many new Greek friends he's made watching soccer, eating Greek food, especially the cheese and almond cookies he'd always bring.
Yamas to the man who always instilled that to be Greek is a privilege not to be ignored.

Terry, ever since we met over 30 years ago you became someone special to me and welcomed me to the family with your big hug. You reminded me of my dad and I know why, you both are great men that loved their family.
You are now with your beloved Caterina in heaven and I know that both of you are the guardian angels watching over Harriet, Dennis, Eric, Mary, Chris, Logan and Ella. I will never forget your smile and hugs. Until we meet again, Kevin and I will always remember you.
