In memory of

Edite Petersons

January 25, 1922 -  January 21, 2018

Edīte Lūcija Pētersons (née Krīgers) died peacefully in her Port Perry home Sunday, January 21st, 2018. Her husband, Arvids, predeceased her in 2006. She will be greatly missed by her daughter Ilze (Harold), son Vilnis (Elita), granddaughters Ann-Marie (Aldis), Margita/Grietiņa (Gerard), Erika (Dainis) and Anna as well as her great-granddaughters Lilja and Teika. Edīte was born on January 25th, 1922 in Embute, Latvia. She had two brothers, Valdis and Oskars, both deceased. In 1944 Edīte, like many compatriots, was forced to flee from Latvia with her husband and mother-in-law ahead of the Red Army. They fled to Germany where Vilnis was born and then on to Canada in 19950. They settled first in Mattawa and then in Toronto where Ilze was born. Edīte was a staunch supporter of her husband and his construction company A. Petersons Ltd., where she kept the company’s books. She was an avid gardener and environmentalist, instilling the love of nature in her children, granddaughters and great-granddaughters. She never forgot her Latvian roots and it was important to her to maintain the Latvian language and teach it to her children and granddaughters. Her love of literature, art and music is manifested in the extensive her home library, paintings and recordings of music. She loved and supported the opera and ballet. The Petersons family is truly grateful for the care that Karen, Diane and Gary, Darlene, Jeannie, Alberta and Erika gave to Edite the last years of her life, allowing Edite to live in her home until her death. Edite’s funeral will take place Sunday, January 28, 2018 with visitation beginning at 9:30 am and service at 10:00 am at the York Funeral Centre, 160 Beecroft Rd., North York, ON. In lieu of flowers, you may wish to make a contribution to the Latvian National Federation in Canada Educational and Cultural Foundation (4 Credit Union Drive, Toronto, Ontario M4A 2N8).
