With love in our hearts, we celebrate the life of Dr. Ashmal Noel Samahin, of Toronto, Ontario, who passed away peacefully on October 28, 2025, at the age of 85.

Born on Christmas day in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Noel excelled from an early age in both academics and sports. He ran track and was the captain of his high school cricket team and later, following in his father’s footsteps, graduated in 1964 from the University of Ceylon with a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery. He moved to London, England, where he met and married Pearl Agard and their first daughter, Natasha, was born. He became a Fellow in the Faculty of Anaesthetists in 1968 before moving to Uppsala, Sweden then settling in Toronto in 1969 where they later welcomed their second daughter, Charmaine, and their son, Jonathan.

Noel’s medical career spanned over 50 years as an anesthesiologist at Toronto East General Hospital, Scarborough Grace Hospital, several outpatient clinics, and as an Adjunct Faculty member at the University of Toronto. He was known as a kindhearted, gentle and caring physician, respected and loved by colleagues and patients alike. He retired in 2020, two days before his 81st birthday.

Noel was devoted to his family and had a special ability to make people feel welcome and loved. He was a kind, thoughtful and humble person who will be remembered for his compassion, his commitment to helping others, his generosity towards those in need, his love of golf and tennis, and his enthusiasm for bridge.

Noel is predeceased by his brother and four of his five sisters. He will be deeply missed by his children, Natasha (Peter), Charmaine (Randy), and Jonathan, and his cherished grandchildren, Nicholas, Hailey, Jake, and Devin.

Though his absence leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, the memories we hold dear will live on.
