With profound grief we announce the sudden and unexpected death of Dr. Michael Paul Figueroa Fralick, at the age of 39 in Toronto. Adored husband to Brittany Rose Lostracco, loved Dada to his darling baby Hailey Rose Lostracco Fralick, beloved son of Dr. Richard Fralick and Nancy Figueroa, idolized older brother to James Fralick, phenomenal younger brother to Dr. John Fralick with his wife Dr. Kimber Thornton, and “Uncle Mop” to niece Arlynn. Mike is dearly missed by his cherished in-laws Robert and Patricia Lostracco, Robin Lostracco and Mark Tracey, Rebecca and Chris McArthur and as fun “Uncle Sea Monster” to niece and nephews Logan, Emilia and Will.
Mike was born in Scarborough and grew up by the idyllic Scarborough Bluffs. His warm, welcoming and fun nature made him a magnet to all. Everyone wanted to be his friend. Mike attended Fairmount Jr. Public School, winning science fairs, starring in school plays, and keeping his teachers on their toes. He excelled in soccer, adored rugby (even if his mother forbade him from playing), and tried his best in hockey. When asked why he wanted to be the goalie he said, ”because I can’t skate.”
At Bliss Carmen Senior Public School Mike enlarged his friendship circle. In one year at Senator O’Connor High School he met his amazing gang of friends he dubbed “The O’Connor Boys”. Mike graduated Queen’s University with more friends, and with his Bachelor of Science. He always maintained he was inspired to pursue medicine because of the profound and life altering experiences had by his brother James. Mike received his MD in 2012 from the University of Toronto, exactly 40 years after his father had also qualified as an MD from U of T. Mike specialized in General Internal Medicine and in 2015 became Chief Medical Resident at St. Michael’s Hospital. We thought he was finished with school. Instead, he fulfilled his childhood dream to attend Harvard University and in 2018 graduated with his Masters in Pharmacoepidemiology. He returned to Toronto, but he still wasn’t finished. In 2019 Mike received his PhD in Epidemiology from U of T.
Mike joined Sinai Health in 2019 as a Clinician Scientist and an Associate Professor of medicine at the University of Toronto. As a physician, he cared deeply for his patients and taught learners of all levels with expertise and humility. He also worked at the Sault Area Hospital and would regularly take trainees with him on elective so they could be exposed to his love of rural medicine. We were moved beyond words when after learning of his death the hospital lowered its flag in honour of our dear Mike.
As a researcher, he ran The Fralick Lab, where he was energized by implementing machine learning models to improve patient care. He supervised research trainees and was a respected mentor to many. Mike thoroughly enjoyed his collaboration with his Denmark research colleagues. His broad interests resulted in numerous papers published in top medical journals around the world. Mike’s work was particularly impactful as it genuinely led to tangible improvements in patient outcomes. As an educator, he authored the book “One-Pagers for the Wards” and he co-hosted “The Rounds Table” podcast with his brother, John.
What mattered most to Mike, however, was not his innumerable awards and accolades, it was being ever present for his family and friends. He’d be the first one to invite you over to sample his latest espresso art, crank up his eclectic taste in music to start a spontaneous dance party, or catch up over a round of golf. He was also the first person to show up if anyone in his life asked for anything, big or small.
After their wedding that took place on the hottest recorded day in 2022, Mike’s joy was forever expanded by the life he continued to lovingly build with his ‘Bub’ Britt. They had a shared commitment to prioritize their family and friends. As partners in true love who travelled the globe, their greatest adventure was their time spent with Hailey. A proud father, Mike found any excuse to send the latest photo or video of her funny and sweet toddler antics. His loving spirit endures in Hailey.
Mike’s death has led to a tremendous outpouring of support from all who knew him. It gives Britt and our families great comfort knowing that his impact will be felt and remembered by many.
A memorial will occur February 9, 2026. We are so grateful for Mike’s extensive community. There will be limited capacity at the funeral home, but livestreaming will be available.
