In memory of

Dr. Hung Bon Wah Der

August 11, 1947 -  July 31, 2016

Dr. Hung Der, 68, passed away peacefully on Sunday July 31, 2016 at North York General Hospital after battling liver cancer. He leaves his wife of 33 years, Lizzie; his son, Jeff, and daughter-in-law, Lisa, their two children, Thomas and Emilia; and his daughter, Jasmine, and her partner, Emily.

Hung came to Canada from China in 1956 as a young boy, eager to explore the riches of "Gold Mountain". He lived an atypical childhood bouncing from one small town to another before arriving in Toronto to study at the University of Toronto. He spent many years travelling: from volunteering in South America to visiting wartime Vietnam. His favourite destination was anywhere in the Canadian North where the air is clean, the waters still, and the stars bright.

Those who knew Hung will remember his kindness, generosity, humility, and storytelling abilities. He will be missed by his nine siblings, nephews and nieces, friends from across the globe, coworkers, and patients. His spirit lives on through his loving wife, children, and grandchildren.

Hung left for Canada when I was very young so I did not know him growing up. I only knew Hung from time to time when the family gather together in Canada. But from what I know of my brother he is truly a sincere, honest and very caring person. I am very proud to have known him and call him my brother. Go with God and say hello to Mom and Dad for us all.

Dear Lizzie, Jeff & Jas,

Our dear Uncle Hung was a precious jewel - so kind, generous and loving! He touched everyone he met with his calm, humble, and gentle disposition. Not only was he a great dentist, but he was always there if we needed someone to talk to or to seek advice. We were so fortunate to have had him as part of our lives and we will truly miss him! He has forever touched our hearts.

Until we meet again, may you rest peacefully!

Our heartfelt sympathies to each of you.

With love, Kathy, David, Stephen, Philip & Michael
