In memory of

Douglas Ian Lethbridge

October 5, 1930 -  February 6, 2022

Douglas Ian Lethbridge sadly passed away on Sunday February 6, 2022 at the age of 91 in North York, Ontario after a long battle with Covid-19. He was brave and fought until the end.

Douglas leaves behind his loving wife Carol Lethbridge, daughter Laura Galdenzi, and his four sons, Paul, Mark, Andrew, and Matthew. Douglas will be deeply missed by his ten grandchildren: Sarah, Lucas, Christina, Remy, Ryan, Francisco, Harrison, Megan, Grace, and Trevor.

Douglas was an active member of his church community where he attended and served as an usher at Timothy Eaton Memorial United Church in Toronto. He had a passion for people and spent much of his life helping others as a Social Worker for the City of Toronto. Douglas had a love for sports and coached minor hockey in Toronto through the 70's and 80's. Douglas was an avid follower of the Detroit Redwings since their 1940's era. As well, he was a follower of the Toronto Blue Jays from their very beginning, in 1977. Douglas could often be seen going for long walks along Yonge street, listening to the Blue Jay games on his walkman.

He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.

Rest in peace Dad. Cherrie, Trevor and I will always remember you for your love of your family, your passion for helping people and our many trips and vacations together. Trevor still remembers his Grandpa fondly for the all the time they spent on the beaches of the Caribbean Islands and for coming to his many baseball games and cheering him on.

Dad has left a legacy of a close family of 5 loving kids and 10 grand children and made sure we all had the experiences of what was likely beyond his means.

We will remember all you were and how much you did for us.

The Lethbridge Family

My grandfather was a testament to what can be done in old age. His commitment to independence in forms of biking and learning were bar none. These attributes reflected a man who never stopped doing what he loved.

Through dedication, we can achieve our desires. He lived as an example to these qualities and he will remain an example that motivates us all, long into our lives, too.

Thank you for being the role model you were.

Today I am remembering my dad and the great memories we shared together. From a very young age, it was my dad that got me interested in technology and engineering by sharing his work at Nortel with me and the stories of his dad working as an engineer. He always expressed a deep interest and support in whatever i was doing through life, whether it be my studies, my career, my family, or our many travels together. He was one of a kind and always provided for us. I am so grateful for my dad and will cherish our memories...love Mark.

Grandma’s Letter:

Our dad, father, and the kindest of souls came to Ontario and Canada when he was 18 years of age. For several years, he lived with his Aunt Ada in North York, paying rent when he was able to earn some money.

I, Carol, met him at a Friday Night Dance group that several friends introduced him to. He took me to my home on that evening. No car, no cash to pay for taxis, just the meager funds that bus and streetcar wanted at that time.

From that evening on, he attended the group with me at Timothy Eaton. He always took me home by bus or the very handy streetcar.

Some Sundays, we attended the Sunday morning service to hear and enjoy Doctor Lawsons’ morning, or even the evening, service. We did this for a few years, before getting engaged and married by Dr. Lawson.

In time, we bought a house in that area and awaited the birth of our first child. Paul Douglas Lethbridge was born in October, the same month as his father. And in time, we welcomed the birth of our daughter, Laura Rose Lethbridge. And yes, yes, in a series of months, we had our disciples – Mark, Andrew and Matthew.

We were truly blessed with a family of 5, Moms’ lucky number.

Sincerely,
Carol Lethbridge.
