In memory of

Douglas Hammar

June 17, 1935 -  August 1, 2021

Doug passed away August 1st, 2021. He was the son of Alex & Esther Hammar from Kitchener Ontario. He is survived by his wife Donna, daughter Laurie (Doug), son Mark (Judi), grandchildren Ashley, Jonathan, Shannon, Chris & Matt, predeceased by his sister Diane (Alistair) & survived by his sister Karen (Roly) Barrett & his cousin Peter (Jenefer) Shaver.

He graduated from the University of Western Ontario with an Honours Degree in Economics & Political Science & served for 63 years as the permanent class president. While there he joined the Beta Theta Phi Fraternity. For 35 years he worked for Bell Canada in Kitchener, Montreal, & Toronto. He represented Bell as a Board Executive for the United Way & as member of the Board of Directors of the CNE Association. Volunteering was his passion. He was a member of the Toronto Junior Board of Trade and President of the Board of Trade Club. He was elected as National V.P. of the Canada Jaycees & was made a member of the Jaycee Senate. He volunteered on the Business Advisory Council for Seneca College & the Canadian Executive Service Overseas where he travelled to Russia, Thailand, Peru, and China on projects.

He enjoyed the TSO concerts & plays at Shaw & Stratford. His hobbies centered around curling at the Board of Trade and Granite Club and golf at the Board of Trade Country Club. He wanted to share his love of golf with his friends, so he organized the ‘Doug Hammar Summer Golf Fest’ where the group started by playing 5 straight days, continuing for 35 years. His interest in seeing and experiencing the world led him to organize with his wife Donna trips to many exotic destinations for them and their friends.

In 1990 his love of Arizona led he and Donna to purchase a home at the Biltmore Courts in Phoenix where he served for 4 years as the President of their HOA. He took pleasure in sharing this with his family and friends. His children and grandchildren gave him much happiness. He was proud of who they were & all their successes. He enjoyed being with them and was grateful for their support. Donna was his ‘Beta sweetheart’. She was his best friend.

May he rest in peace. He will live in our hearts forever.

Donations would be welcome to the Parkinson’s Canada & UNICEF Canada.

So glad I had the chance to meet Doug. He was an ultimate gentleman and a delightful
story-teller. My mother, June, was blessed to have Donna and Doug in her life.
Love, Judy
