Born in Toronto on August 8, 1933, daughter of the late Irene and George Stoate. Passed away peacefully on August 22, 2024 at the Scarborough General Hospital surrounded by family and friends, having recently celebrated her 91st birthday.
Debbie grew up in Toronto, but moved with her family to Florida in 1972 where she started a career in banking. She was a Savings Counselor for Freedom Federal in New Port Richey, Florida and eventually moved back to Canada in 1980. She then worked as a Banking Associate for Scotiabank until her retirement.
Debbie enjoyed many happy years living independently in Cooksville, Mississauga. She was frequently seen getting around on her much-loved scooter heading to various places including Timmies (for a steeped tea!), and happily purchasing her scratch tickets. She loved engaging in conversations, sharing stories and making new friends. Her warm smile and infectious laughter drew people to her. Her interests over the years included roller skating, line dancing, travelling, country music, hockey (GO LEAFS!), animals and playing the lottery. She received constant support from her beloved son Jim, and his family who made regular visits to her home to ensure she was always comfortable and content. Her friends also made special visits to see her and they spent lots of quality time together. Debbie became sick with a near life ending illness in 2023 and moved to Bendale Acres LTC in Scarborough to be closer to her son Jim and his family.
Debbie will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her 3 children Paul (Pam), Cheryl and Jim (Sharon). She also leaves behind 6 grandchildren; Jennifer, Chase, Kori, David, Ashley and Emily, and 4 great-grandchildren; Brandon, Kayson, Jesse and Auden. Debbie will be greatly missed by her “BFF” Marcia and by Tami and nieces Laura (Peter), Linda (Doug), and Lisa (Ed predeceased). Debbie was predeceased by her sister Barbara, granddaughter Amanda and nephew Brian. She was the beloved companion of 33 years to the late Ron Karr. Debbie described Ron as “the love of my life” and they created many special memories throughout the years. They kept very busy and enjoyed activities including travelling, golfing, dancing, biking and walking. She will be buried next to Ron and they will remain together forever, as both had wished.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the wonderful, caring staff at Bendale Acres who helped make her last year so memorable and happy. Thanks also to the compassionate and committed staff on the Palliative unit at Scarborough General Hospital who helped make her last days more comfortable.
As per Debbie’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a private gravesite service on Saturday Sept 7, 2024. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory are requested to the Canadian Cancer Society or any Humane Society.
