In memory of

Donald James Caldwell

January 5, 1926 -  December 8, 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donald (Don) James Caldwell, peacefully at home. Married to Marie (nee Douglass) (predeceased 2017) for 65 wonderful years, Don is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Patsy and Sal Badali of Niagara-on-the-Lake, daughter Catherine Caldwell of Turks & Caicos, son and daughter-in-law Alex and Caroline Caldwell of Toronto, and son and daughter-in-law Doug and Nancy Caldwell of Mississauga; grandchildren Bryan Badali (Joanne), Paul Badali (Anita), Kevin Badali, Veronica Caldwell, Anthony Caldwell (Angelina), Cameron Caldwell (Taylor) and Austin Caldwell (Meghan); niece Wendy McQuade Forrest (Craig) of Ottawa. A graduate of McMaster University, Don taught mathematics and physics first in Gananoque, then Newmarket where he met and married Marie. They moved to Toronto in 1960, settling in Etobicoke, where he continued his career at Alderwood Collegiate for over 20 years, leaving Alderwood as Head of Mathematics when it closed. He continued teaching math at Lakeshore Collegiate until his retirement in 1984. Following the passing of Marie, Don moved to Parkland on the Glen in Mississauga in March 2019. The family would like to thank the staff for their exceptional compassion and care of Don over the past two years.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Humane Society of Canada (www.humanesociety.com/donate-now) are greatly appreciated.

Rest in peace Don. My memories of you as my math teacher at A.C.I. (63-68) are forever fixed in my brain. Thankyou for being as good as you were and for caring that your students actually learned something before graduating.

Don was a very talented and professional teacher he inspired you to do better. He took the time to past the passion for math on to future generations. I had the pleasure of having him as a math teacher at both ACI and LCI. Don also created the schools class schedules for ACI. It was fun to see him active in school presentations for Christmas on the closing year of ACI. I was so happy to visit with Don after our 2015 reunion of ACI at Franklin Horner centre and present him with a ACI letterman sweater and Aggie T-shirt and appreciation plaque we talked about memories of ACI. He was one of the greats a teacher that will live in our memories always.

Love and hugs to his family

The best math teacher I ever had and a good sense of humour. I enjoyed all his classes . RIP.

I always felt very insecure in math class until grade 12, when I had the good fortune to be assigned to Mr. Caldwell for algebra. He made it so interesting and logical that my marks improved vastly. In fact, after one exam he told me he thought I could have done better. When the class reviewed the exam, it turned out that Mr. Caldwell had added up my marks incorrectly and I actually got one of the highest marks in the class. He was so pleased, as was I. That was the year he was off for several weeks after catching the mumps from his kids. He was a truly wonderful teacher and a lovely man.
