In memory of

Dipali Banerjee

October 1, 1939 -  May 22, 2024

Let my thoughts come to you, when I am gone, like the afterglow of sunset at the margin of starry silence. — Rabindranath Tagore

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Dipali Banerjee at her home on May 22, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones. Dipali embodied strength, resilience, compassion, and a quick wit that brightened every situation. She grew up in Kolkata at 1 South End Park. Dipali was part of a large family of fifteen siblings who shared a close bond and a great sense of humor.

Dipali Banerjee dedicated herself to her education, focusing on history and teaching which shaped her future endeavors. She graduated from City College Kolkata with a major in History and obtained a Bachelor of Education from Calcutta University's Hasting’s House in Kolkata.

Dipali married Sukumar Banerjee in 1963 and moved to Kampala, Uganda where she welcomed her son Subrata in 1966 and her daughter Sutapa in 1970. This marked the beginning of her adventures abroad, including a move to Canada in 1972.

Dipali was an active and dedicated supporter of the Bengali community in Toronto. Alongside her husband, Sukumar Banerjee, Dipali was a founding member of the Toronto Kalibari. She was an esteemed member of the Bengali Cultural Association (PBCA) now Bangiya Parishad Toronto (BPT). Additionally, she devoted her time and energy to the Vedanta Society of Toronto, embodying the principles of service and community. Her contributions to various community groups showcased her leadership and dedication to service. Dipali's home in Brampton was well known for its welcoming atmosphere and delicious cooking, making it a favourite gathering spot for friends and family. She adored her friends and cherished spending time with them.

Dipali loved travelling, cooking, gardening, and classical dancing, which brought joy not only to her but to everyone who knew her. Her life was a testament to the power of nurturing and the importance of community.

Dipali was a devoted and loving wife to the late Sukumar Banerjee, a cherished mother to Subrata, Sutapa and Anil, and a beloved Dida to Avani, Ariana, Dylan and Jordan.

Dipali leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience that will forever resonate with those who were fortunate enough to know her.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Yu, Dr. Saeed, the Palliative Care team at William Osler Health System, and the PSWs at Spectrum Health Care. Special appreciation to Elvie, Rose, Raj, and Shirley for their outstanding dedication and care.

Flowers can be sent to the Meadowvale Funeral Centre or a donation can be made in Dipali Banerjee’s memory to Parkinson Canada and the Canadian Lung Association. We extend our heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of support during this time and invite all to reflect on her remarkable life.

Dear Sutapa,
I didn’t get the chance to know your mom very well. However, from the beautiful note you left I derived some insights about your late mother.
It must have been fun growing up with a mother who was so involved and dedicated to her community. Your house always being open and welcoming guests is certainly entertaining. In addition, I can only imagine the important life lessons your mom must have taught you since she had so many keen interests and seems to have been a very wise lady.
May her soul rest in peace,
Much love,
Mona
