In memory of

Dimitrios Kourkoutis

August 15, 1936 -  October 1, 2024

Dimitrios made his entry to the world at home in the village of Paleokomi, Serres, Greece on the Feast of the Dormition of Virgin Mary, one of the most important religious holidays in the country. He was the second of four siblings, the first son born to Spyros & Eleni (nee Papadimou). Dimitrios spent his childhood and early youth working on the family farm, swimming and fishing in the Strymonas River. He married his first & true love Keraso (nee Mantziari) when they were teenagers. Before long they welcomed their one & only child Spyros in 1960 and soon afterwards moved to Thessaloniki, eventually settling in the Athens suburb of Ilioupoli.

Dimitrios will be remembered as a down to earth, kind and gentle man. He would do anything for his family including a move to Toronto, Canada in 1987 so he and Keraso could be near their son and grandchildren. He was the best Pappou helping raise his three grandchildren. Never once did he scold them. He spent hours building things with them including a coop for the chickens he brought home and a cozy house for the rabbits. We will never forget how he taught the grandkids to walk the pigeon with a string tied to its foot. His vegetable gardens were legendary and he helped make hundreds of jars of tomato sauce every year. He was good with all animals and fearless of the pesky ones. Even the raccoons learned to stay away from him.

Dimitrios is survived by his wife of almost 70 years Keraso, son Spyros (Theodora), grandchildren Cerise, Hillary (Abby), Dimitri (Stephanie), great-grandchildren Constantine & Maximus, sister Panayiota and many nieces & nephews in Greece.

A warm, loving, open-hearted individual who will be remembered and sorely missed. My favorite moments found us sitting together at the kitchen table, chatting comfortably as he occupied himself with food preparation. R.I.P., dear man.
