It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Despina (Betty) Kalkanis, née Kokkoros
July 24, 1940 – January 13, 2026

Despina departed this life peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. She was a devout Christian, a beloved wife and a deeply loving mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, sister-in-law and friend to many.
Despina’s devotion to her family was extraordinary. No one loved her family more fiercely and no one fought harder for them than she did.

She was determined and feisty, yet warm-hearted and good-natured, with a cheeky sense of humour and a true zest for life. She lit up every room she entered with her incredible energy, elegance and unmistakable sense of style. Despina’s presence will be profoundly missed. She was a legend.

There will be much celebration in heaven as she is welcomed home and reunited with her parents, her seven brothers and her loved ones.
She now rests in peace.
May her memory be eternal.

Visitation will take place at the Elgin Mills Funeral Centre (1591 Elgin Mills Rd. East, Richmond Hill) on Monday, January 19, 2026, from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will take place at the St. Panteleimon Greek Orthodox Church (11323 Warden Ave., Markham) on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at the Elgin Mills Cemetery in Section 10.
