In memory of

Dennis Sydney Oliver Murphy

February 3, 1946 -  October 1, 2016

Our hearts are broken, but you left us with so much. The way you lived your life taught us to be compassionate and brave, to love unconditionally, to treat people with kindness and respect, to be silly, and to recognize the importance of community. Loving brother and husband, father to two, but a dad to so many more; a helper, a fixer and a wicked one pot chef. You stayed brave and compassionate even as you fought these last few months, and you never let us forget how much you loved us. You will always be in our hearts and our lives and we can take comfort in knowing that you are at peace now. Love you forever and always.

I only knew Dennis for a short period of time but in that time it was evident he was an extraordinary man. Kind, smart, funny, always ready with a smile and a story. May you rest in peace Dennis. We will remember you always. To the girls you left behind, know that he is always looking down on you and that you will forever be surrounded by his love and guidance. Sending our love and hugs from Montreal.

When I was a teenager during summer vacation my uncle and I would do renovations in our building. Being a teenager I wanted to sleep in but Uncle Dennis would wake me up at 8am.

After the first day of not being able to sleep in, I decided to get up after everyone left for work to chain the front door so he couldn't get in with his key, and went back to bed.
He came in through the back and woke me up.

That night I locked the back door with the lock that can only be opened from the inside, got up early and put the chain on the front, and went back to bed.
He opened the window next to the back door, stuck his hand through and unlocked the door, and woke me up.

That night I locked the back door with the lock that can only be opened from the inside, locked the window, got up early and put the chain on the front, and went back to bed.
The next morning Uncle Dennis got a ladder, climbed to my bedroom window, and proceeded to knock on the window until I let him in.

He was a man that would always find a way to get things done.
(on a side note, when I asked if we could start at 9am instead of 8am he was cool with it so I got to sleep in a bit without having to get up early to chain the door, should have opened with that suggestion)
