In memory of

Jim (Demetre) Aspiotis

February 20, 1964 -  February 7, 2021

It is with great sadness that the family of Jim (Demetre) Aspiotis announces his passing after a brief illness on Sunday February 7, 2021 at the age of 56. Jim will be lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend of 35 years, Cheryl. He will be greatly missed by his two beautiful daughters, Demi and Victoria, who were his pride and joy. Jim will also be forever remembered by the Gambier and Granic/Frost families. He leaves behind proud mother Efrosini and adoring brother Steve. He was the well-loved son-in-law of Lawrence and late Mary Rabuka. Jim has been reunited with his father George who passed in July 2020.

Jim came to Canada from Greece as an infant, where he and his family navigated the realities of being new immigrants. Growing up, Jim worked in the family businesses before transitioning into Ontario’s correctional services. Jim started as a Correctional Officer at the Toronto Jail in the early 1990s. From there, he worked his way up through the ranks to Deputy Superintendent at the Toronto South Detention Centre. During Jim’s outstanding career he had an extreme passion for conquering crime and eliminating gun and gang violence within the facilities that he dutifully served and out in the community.

Jim was the definition of a family man and was a devoted husband and doting father. Jim and Cheryl started dating in their early-20s before getting married in 1992. They were married for 29 wonderful years, in total sharing 35 years of unconditional love. His greatest pride and joy were his two daughters - he was extraordinarily proud of his daughters’ accomplishments and he was not afraid to share his elation.

A funeral service in memory of Jim will be held on Friday, February 26, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Pine Hills Cemetery, with Father Philip Philippou of the St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church officiating. Due to government restrictions, the service is by invitation only. The funeral will also be made available by livestream on the Mount Pleasant Group, Pine Hills Cemetery website.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Scarborough General Hospital (General Campus) where he received excellent and compassionate care in his final days. We would like to sincerely thank the hardworking doctors and nurses who afforded him the comfort and dignity he deserved. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for the family, which can be found at this link: https://ca.gofundme.com/f/tribute-to-jim-aspiotis?qid=813a71e27760b121b4caf8a24886c092
