In memory of

David Richard Johnston

May 21, 1931 -  August 1, 2023

It is with deep sadness we announce that David Richard Johnston passed away on August 1, 2023, at the age of 92. He leaves behind his loving wife Kirsten, his children Linda (Dean), Susan (Pierre), Dave (Heather), Liz (Mark) and stepson Robert (Susie). David was also grandpa to Melanie, Alex, Matthew, Maggie, Danielle, Benoit, Chelsea, Ethan, and Cayley, and great grandpa to 6 great grandchildren. He was devoted to his family and was a patient and wise counsel to all who turned to him for advice on everything from wine to investments.

Growing up in Sarnia, he graduated from University of Toronto in mathematics and went on to complete his actuarial studies after joining Crown Life Insurance Company in 1954. He worked his way through increasingly senior positions and in 1984 was appointed Senior Vice-President and Actuary. When Crown Life moved to Regina in 1993, David took early retirement, only to immediately take on the position of Actuary at Assuris, until he finally retired fully at age 75.

In retirement he worked tirelessly as a volunteer board member to help develop and expand the Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia Foundation of Canada in support of patients who, like him, were diagnosed with this rare form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

David never met a sport he didn't like, but soccer and baseball were close to his heart. As a soccer coach for St. Andrews Soccer Club in the seventies his teams, which included some of his children, achieved great results. Later he and Kirsten spent many happy hours in their club seats at the newly opened Skydome, highlighted by the Blue Jays winning Pennants and World Series. He also continued curling until Covid shut everything down.

Travel was another favourite pastime, and he and Kirsten spent a great deal of time exploring many regions of the world known for good food and wine, where he put his special talent for scouting restaurants to good use.

We will miss his sharp mind and sense of humour, and the sight of him puttering endlessly and happily in the garden and at the family cottage.
.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 11, 2023 from 1 - 4 pm at the Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto. A private family celebration of David's life will take place later.

Condolences may be left at www.mountpleasantgroup.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia Foundation of Canada (www.wmfc.ca) or a charity of your choice.

So sorry to see David pass away. As a youth we got to see him and his family usually for a week at the family cottage. Many happy memories of those. I certainly got to appreciate his sense of humour and a few times got to kick a soccer ball around with him. He will be missed.
