In memory of

Daphne Sylvia Golbourne

October 17, 1930 -  March 28, 2022

With heavy hearts and great sadness, we mourn the loss of our dearly cherished and beloved Daphne Golbourne, who with family by her side passed away on March 28, 2022 at the Seven Oaks Long Term Care Home in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. Born Daphne Sylvia Bailey on October 17, 1930 in the township of First Hill, Trelawny Parish to Samuel and Enid Bailey, Daphne was the fifth of nine children and was affectionately known throughout her life as Mrs. Daph, Aunt Daph or simply Daph.

Daphne attended the First Hill Congregational School until a serious leg injury forced her to abandon her studies. Remaining at home in the care of her mother and father, she picked up a trick or two from her father who was a carpenter; skills that would come in handy throughout her life. Moving to St Ann Parish by the age of 17 to live with her Uncle Ken, it was there that she would build her life. First as a caregiver to ailing family and eventually her first business; her bar. Years later, in walks a stranger named Neville Golbourne, who, after a few rounds of rejection would eventually gain her favor and ultimately her hand in marriage. The birth of her two boys Radcliffe and Wycliffe soon followed, along with a plan to emigrate to Canada.

By April 1974 Daphne, with two sons in tow began what would be her immigrant story in Canada. The first few years were spent working at the Women’s College Hospital before leaving to pursue her next entrepreneurial endeavor alongside her husband – the West Indian Food Market. A staple in the Ossington & College area of Toronto, their store was a hub for the West Indian community and rode a wave of success for a few years. Sadly, after the passing of her husband in 1982, coupled with the demographic change to the area, over time, the business was no longer viable and had to close. Soon after Daphne found work in the hotel service industry where she remained until retirement. During her leisure years she became an avid gardener as well as a talented and creative seamstress. In fact, she was a jack of all trades being able to observe, assess and fix most things in her environment – for this she often credited her father, the carpenter. Throughout Daphne’s life and career God was always at the center of it all … now she is with her Heavenly Father.

A strong, independent woman, a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, church sister and dear friend to many. Daphne is survived by her devoted sons Radcliffe (Nydia) and Wycliffe, as well as grandchildren, Edana and Aaron Joseph. Also left to mourn Daphne’s loss is her only remaining sibling Hope (George), along with countless Nieces and Nephews here in the Greater Toronto Area, Manitoba, New York, Florida, Cayman Islands, UK and of course Jamaica (West Indies), her place of birth.

Daphne is predeceased by her late husband Neville Golbourne; siblings, Sisters: Roslyn, Mavis, Dorice. Brothers: Hugh, Ivan, George, Llewelyn Sr. “Jackie” and finally Joseph “Bill” who passed away one day prior to the passing of Mrs. Daph.

Our family’s one in a million irreplaceable treasure will never be forgotten and will continue live on within our hearts forever. Heaven has received an angel!

Offering and donations will be collected and gifted in Daphne Golbourne’s name to support Health Care and Long-Term Care Facilities which have been instrumental in her care during the final phases of her glorious life.

Condolences to the Goldbourne family from my family. I was blessed to know Momma Goldbourne. I would go by and visit, as Rad and I have been friends since high school. She always welcomed me. Then when o had children of my own, she treated them like they were her own grandchildren. May you rest in the arms of Jesus. Until we meet again. Stay strong my friend, May you and your family find strength during this difficult time.
