In memory of

Clayton Ruby

February 6, 1942 -  August 2, 2022

B.A., LL.B., LL.M., LL.D. (honoris causa)

It is with great sadness that his family announces the death of their treasure, Clay, on August 2, 2022 at the age of 80 due to complications after heart surgery- a great, tragic irony since Clay was a heart on two legs. Beloved spouse of Harriet Sachs, adored father of Emma (Jane) and Kate (Andrew), cherished grandfather of Esmé and Caleb, and dear brother of Brenda (Bobby). Clay practiced criminal and constitutional law for fifty years and was committed to using his legal skills to make the world a better place. He succeeded.

From the start of his career, Clay was a staunch fighter for justice, a brave defender of the unpopular and disregarded, and a calm presence in any crisis. He was wholly himself -- principled, warm, without fear and unparalleled in any debate -- for the entirety of his life. He died happy and without regrets.

In lieu of donations, go out and change the world.

“Ring the bells that still can ring.”

A celebration of Clay’s life will be held at 2pm, August 9th at Mt. Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mt. Pleasant Rd., Toronto. Please wear masks and bright colors. A link to livestream Clay's Celebration of Life will be available at the top of this page at approximately 1:45 pm.

To arrive at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre please enter through the EAST gates off of Mount Pleasant Rd. and follow the signs that point to the Funeral Centre.
