Professor Clare Beghtol did so much more than teach knowledge of classification theory. She inspired, encouraged, demanded and illuminated thinking and insights into the organization of knowledge. As a mature student coming back into university in 2004, I was both delighted and intimidated to take her classes and learn from this true scholar. In a hot difficult summer course when most of the students in her classification theory class were indifferent, I was inspired to work on my most challenging paper. She was generous in her time and advice to help me and others to do the best that we could achieve.

Nalini reminded me of mum's sock drawer thought experiment, and when I returned home after the funeral, I opened my sock drawer, certain that I did not have any particular way of organizing it. However, it turns out, I most certainly do! So interesting, our drive to make order, to make sense of things, and such a personal individual thing. This is why students loved my mum! ~ Emily
