Christine Marion Charles

September 28, 1921 -  March 21, 2019

Christine Marion Charles (nee Newson)

After 97 1/2 years, Christine Charles has completed her life journey. She died peacefully knowing she was deeply loved by family and many wonderful friends.
She was predeceased by her husband Peter and by son Robert (“Bob”). She is survived by her daughters Jill Barker (Wayne) and Susan (Drew Belshaw); daughter-in-law Helen; grandchildren Kevin (Missy), Scott, Sarah (Paul), Alanna, Brendan, Austin, Sean, Patrick; great grandchildren Sam and Emmie and a large extended family.
Christine was born in Ottawa to Henry and Gladys Newson. As an RCMP family they moved from coast to coast. She became an accomplished figure skater, and ultimately settled in Toronto where she married Peter, the love of her life, in 1942.
She became a Mum extraordinaire in 1945 and continued as Mum to 3 children and numerous other “kids” who lived with her for weeks at a time over the years. Canoe tripping was a preferred vacation experience for over several decades. In the early 80’s, she started a second career with The Nimble Thimble that lasted over 25 years. In 2007 she decided to move from the family home on Cheritan Avenue to a condo and then into Amica Bayview Village in 2015.
Mum, Granny, Auntie Chris, Christine, Chrissie – she will live forever in our hearts.
A private family service will be held on March 28th. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life from 4-6pm, March 28th at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre. In lieu of flowers kindly donate to the Salvation Army, Famous People Players or a charity of your choice. For online condolences please visit www.etouch.ca.

In my last conversation with her around Christmas time, she was full of tales of her family and so interested in mine. We chatted and laughed for about 30 minutes and that is the way I will remember her. In many ways she was very much like my Dad, maybe that was why they were so close. The glass was always half full and the solution to every problem started with a smile. I will miss her terribly.

I think Chrissie Charles must be the same person who was good friends of my Mom, Barbara (Nash) Howell. My Mom was born July 7, 1921 in Edmonton and skated at the Glenora Club. She died at 94 1/2 on Jan. 12, 2016 in Toronto. She married my Dad, Bob Howell, at 22, and they ended up in Toronto in 1957. I think my Mom saw Chrissie Charles quite frequently with many old Edmonton friends such as Audry Austin and Norma Thompson, and perhaps Molly MacKenzie, and I can't remember who else. I've met Chrissie Charles many times at my Mom's house. I'm just going over old letters of my Mom's, so when I saw "Chrissie Charles from 1921", I'm guessing that it is one and the same. I know that my Mom had a wonderful life starting off with great days in Edmonton and growing up there. You don't have to respond- I'm just perhaps closing a circle. - Take care, Brenda (Howell) Becker - brendabecker@bell.net.

My heartfelt condolences to the Charles family. I shall miss the opportunities enjoyed talking with Christine from time to time next door in AMICA. Enjoying Christine’s former abode in Claridges with very pleasant memories of first meeting her and daughters and son-in-law five years ago. May God bless you, Christine, and your grieving family.
