Life Stories

Stephen Maynard (Spouse)

Entered November 1, 2017

Cher was a single mother with 2 young children when I met her in 1992. We all got together shortly thereafter for my daughter Rachel's 5th Birthday. Mel was 1 and Aaron had just turned 4. My older children Tiffany 14 was living with me and Ryan 12 was with his mom. Cher went camping with us in the summers but always looked forward to getting back home away from the mosquitoes. We lived together in the summer of 1992. In 1995 Cher graduated as a Medical Secretary one of her aspirations and found employment with 2 specialists working out of NYGH. She later worked in Toronto Western Hospital for a fantastic boss Dr A. Miniaci an Orthopaedic surgeon. Unfortunately he went to the US to get more surgical time. She loved helping family members get proper medical care and pulled strings wherever she could. After this she went to work for an Endocrinologist at Scarboro Centenary. He was the worst boss she ever had, as he threatened to fire her because of her diabetes. She left his employ for shoulder surgery and then worked for a NeuroSurgeon at Scarboro General. That didn't work out due to seizures at work from diabetes (low sugars). Around 2007 she ceased working and had stopped driving. She went on Disability after that. We did manage to get in a few trips in various parts of the world, We travelled to Europe a few times for Mediterranean Cruises of the Eastern and Western Mediterranean. We also went on a number of Caribbean cruises the last being to Panama Canal and Costa Rica where we went on our first zip lining adventure. She loved it, especially the 1/2 mile long zip line that she got stuck 40 feet from the finish due to her light weight !
We also had a number of cats, dogs anon Christmas morning d fish over the years. In 1995 on Christmas morning I pretended to get paged and she was upset until I walked in the door an hour later with a tiny litte shitzu puppy in a basket that we named Shelby. In 2000 we added a St Bernard puppy we called Chewie. Everyone loved him too, but sadly we lost him in 2006 due to cancer. Shelby stuck around until 2009 and passed away at 14. Aaron got a little black pug in 2008, which she loved as well.
In 2010 I retired so Cher and I toured around on the bike and went on a few long rides together. She liked going to Port Dover for the Friday the 13th ride. Last year she met Meena at the Great Blue Heron while I was in a tournament and we became very good friends with her family. Over the last 4 or 5 years we have been travelling to Costa Rica with our friend Dieter. She enjoyed spending time with Dieter and got a little healthier after each trip. Around 4 years ago we had Cher in the Emergency due to a leg infection at that time we were very worried, but she pulled through after a round of very strong antibiotics, a year later she was treated with the same thing for another infection. A short while later our family doctor called me to say I needed to take Cher to the Emergency right away, her Blood Sodium level was critically low.
After 4 days we found out she had a very severe problem, chronic hyponatremia.
This problem caused her to have seizures from drinking too much water. She needed Sodium supplement 3 times a day and meds at bedtime to maintain sodium levels. Water intake was also severely limited. This problem persisted up until her passing in 2017 and may have been instrumental. We all loved Cher very much and she will be missed especially by her only grandson Caleb.
Rest in Peace Sweetie. We love you ... Steve and family
