In memory of Chen Hwei Hsu
February 26, 1940 – July 24, 2021

Chen Hwei Hsu passed away peacefully on July 24, 2021 at home in Peterborough, Ontario (at age 81) with family at her side. Predeceased by her husband, Dr. Chimei James Hsu, she will be dearly missed by her children Chia-Wen (Simon Dadds), Yi-Wen (Stefan Egge), Melvin and Vivian (Tim Giddens). Loving grandmother to Robert Egge, (late) Brent Dadds and Katherine Egge, she will hold special memories in our hearts forever.

Born in Yangzhou, China and raised in Taiwan, at the age of 31, she and her husband Chimei started a new life with their two young daughters in St. John’s, Newfoundland. It was there that she made lifelong friends, the bonds with whom remained steadfast even after she moved to New Brunswick, spent significant retirement time in China and moved to Toronto later in life. A teacher of Chinese history and language by training and profession, Chen Hwei tutored her children in Mandarin at home and later taught Mandarin classes in the community. Chen Hwei and her husband Chimei enjoyed travel, but especially loved spending time close to nature. Widely known as an excellent cook, Chen Hwei innately felt that food was the absolute expression of love, and she delighted in ensuring that her family and friends were always well fed.

Chen Hwei will be dearly missed and will live on in our memories. We are all grateful for the excellent care provided by Chia-Wen and her family to Chen Hwei and for the outstanding support of Chen Hwei’s medical team in her final days.

A private funeral will be held at a later time.
